Your English-speaking driver-guide shares the island's volcanic story on the way. The default option is a shared small-group tour; a private version is also available. Full Description

Fira cable car: the start for cruise passengers

Cruise ships do not dock in Santorini; they anchor in the flooded caldera and tender boats bring passengers to the old port below Fira. From there the cable car climbs about 220 metres up the cliff in a few minutes, and the top station sits right in the centre of the island's capital. That is exactly where this tour begins, which makes it one of the easiest Santorini shore excursions to join: there is no taxi queue and no searching for a bus.

Our team waits at the cable car exit with a sign showing your name, and you are back at the same spot at the end, so you can walk straight to the cable car down to your tender. If you are staying on the island rather than arriving by ship, the meeting point is also simple to reach on foot from anywhere in Fira. Cable car tickets are not part of the tour, so keep some time for the queue on busy cruise days.

Firostefani and its blue-domed church

Firostefani starts where Fira ends, a short way north along the caldera path, and it feels calmer and more residential than the busy capital. Its name means 'crown of Fira', and from its terraces you look straight down the dark volcanic cliffs to the deep blue water, with the black volcanic islets of Nea Kameni and Palea Kameni in the middle of the caldera.

The first stop of the tour is the much-photographed church with its cobalt blue dome and white bell tower set against the sea, one of the classic Santorini postcard scenes. You have about 15 minutes here for photos while your guide explains how the islanders built their churches and cave houses into the soft volcanic rock. Morning light is especially beautiful on the white walls, and the stop is short and easy, with only a few steps from the minibus.

Imerovigli, the balcony of the Aegean

Imerovigli is the highest village on the caldera rim, and locals call it the balcony of the Aegean. Its name comes from the word for a daytime lookout: from here watchmen once scanned the sea for pirates. Below the village rises Skaros Rock, a huge headland where a fortified medieval settlement and castle stood until earthquakes and time left only ruins.

During the 15-minute photo stop you see the whole curve of the caldera, from Fira to Oia, and the layers of red, black and white rock that tell the story of the great Bronze Age eruption that shaped the island. Imerovigli is quieter than Oia and Fira, so this stop is often a favourite moment for photos without crowds. Ask your guide to point out the cave hotels carved into the cliff and the small chapels clinging to the slope.

Finikia, a peaceful traditional village

Before Oia the tour stops in Finikia, a small village just inland from the northern tip of the island. It is one of the best-kept secrets of Santorini: narrow lanes, houses painted in soft pastel colours, old churches and traditional courtyards, with almost none of the crowds you meet on the caldera.

The 15-minute stop gives you a different picture of island life, showing how villagers lived away from the cliffs, with vaulted roofs and thick walls that kept their houses cool in summer. From the edge of the village the view opens over the northern slopes and the open Aegean towards the island of Ios on clear days. It is a gentle, almost silent stop that many travellers remember as their favourite surprise of the day.

Oia: blue domes, white lanes and the castle ruins

Oia is the village that made Santorini famous: whitewashed cave houses, blue-domed churches and narrow marble-paved lanes on the northern tip of the caldera. Many of its grand houses once belonged to sea captains, and the village was largely rebuilt after the 1956 earthquake. You have about 75 minutes here to walk the main pedestrian street, find the famous blue domes for your photos, browse small art galleries and craft shops, and reach the ruins of the Venetian castle at the very end of the village.

From the castle you look down at Ammoudi, the tiny fishing port at the foot of the red cliffs, and across the water to Thirassia. Oia involves walking and many steps, but you are free to go at your own pace and stay near the main street. Is Oia worth visiting on a short stop? Absolutely: it is the highlight most travellers come to Santorini to see, and this tour gets you there without the stress of buses or taxis.
