Full Description
The Corinth Canal
The Corinth Canal is a narrow channel about six kilometres long, cut through the isthmus that joins the Peloponnese to mainland Greece. It opened in 1893 and connects the Gulf of Corinth with the Saronic Gulf, saving ships the long voyage around the peninsula. The walls of the canal rise nearly eighty metres above the water, and looking down from the bridge is a memorable moment.
The stop here is short, giving time for photos and a stretch of the legs before you continue to the ancient site. If you are searching for how to visit the Corinth Canal from Athens, this half-day trip is a straightforward answer, as the drive is about an hour and you do not have to arrange parking or navigation.
Ancient Corinth
Ancient Corinth was one of the richest and most important cities of the Greek world, a great trading port on two seas. Today the site shows a mix of Greek and Roman remains. The most striking is the Temple of Apollo, a Doric temple from the 6th century BC with its powerful columns still standing. You also see the wide agora, the Peirene Fountain and the Bema, the platform where the apostle Paul is said to have been brought before the Roman governor.
A visit to Ancient Corinth takes about two hours and includes walking over uneven ground, so wear sturdy shoes. In our default option, the ticket to Ancient Corinth is included, and the second option does not include it, so you pay at the entrance. Above the site rises Acrocorinth, a huge medieval fortress on the rock that once served as the city's acropolis.
The VR app and audio guide
Because there is no live guide, the trip uses a virtual reality application and an audio guide, with earphones provided, to explain what you see. The VR app shows how the temple, the agora and the streets looked in ancient times, which is very helpful when you are looking at scattered stones and columns. The audio guide is available in a range of languages, including English.
The English-speaking driver and host handle the logistics, answer practical questions and keep the group on schedule. If you like to explore at your own pace, this format works well, and you can listen to the commentary as you walk. It is a good choice for travellers who want the ancient sites and the canal in half a day.
