Full Description

Knossos Palace, the heart of Minoan Crete

Knossos is often called Europe's oldest city. The first palace rose soon after 2000 BC as the seat of a powerful Bronze Age ruler; an earthquake destroyed it around 1700 BC, and it was rebuilt as an even more magnificent complex of up to four storeys, with hundreds of interlocking rooms, monumental courts, elegant staircases, workshops and walls covered in brilliant frescoes. For more than three centuries it was the political and religious centre of Minoan Crete, until earthquakes and fires in the fourteenth century BC brought its decline.

A Knossos tour with a guide makes the site far easier to read, because the ruins mix original walls with early twentieth-century restorations. Your guide explains which parts are ancient, how the palace worked and how the legend of the labyrinth and the Minotaur may have grown from its maze of corridors. In 2025 Knossos joined the UNESCO World Heritage List with other Minoan palaces of Crete.

The Central Court and the Throne Room

The tour enters through the West Court and follows the ancient corridors to the Central Court, the great rectangular space around which the whole palace was planned. Here the guide describes the ceremonies held in the court and the famous Minoan sport of bull leaping, shown in frescoes now kept in the Heraklion museum, and points out the copy of the charging bull relief above the North Entrance.

On the west side of the court lies the Throne Room, one of the most famous rooms of the ancient world. Its gypsum throne still stands where it was found, between stone benches and painted griffins, beside a sunken basin probably used for ritual purification. Because skip-the-line entry gets you inside at the start of your slot, you reach this busy room with your group rather than waiting in the ticket queue outside.

Royal apartments, storerooms and the Minoan water system

In the east wing your guide leads you to the Grand Staircase, which descends several floors around a light well, and into the royal apartments: the Hall of the Double Axes and the Queen's Megaron with its fresco of blue dolphins. Along the way you see the palace's remarkable engineering, from clay pipes that carried fresh water to stone channels for rainwater and drainage, one of the earliest such systems in Europe.

On the west side, the storerooms still hold rows of giant clay jars that once stored oil and grain, a reminder of how the palace controlled the island's wealth. Nearby are the sacred sanctuaries, including the tripartite shrine and the repositories where the famous snake goddess figurines were discovered. The whole walk covers about a kilometre on uneven paths and steps, so wear comfortable shoes.

Getting to Knossos and the Heraklion Archaeological Museum

How to get to Knossos: the site is about five kilometres south of Heraklion, around 15 minutes by taxi or 20 to 30 minutes on city bus line 2 from the centre. If you drive, arrive 30 minutes early, as parking is busy between 10:00 and 11:00. Round-trip pickup from Heraklion city centre can be added as an option after booking, and our team arranges the details with you.

After the tour, many travellers continue to the Heraklion Archaeological Museum, which keeps the original frescoes, figurines and treasures from the palace you have just seen. An optional 90-minute guided museum tour at 13:30 can be added after booking; transport between the two sites is not included. The best time to visit Knossos is spring or autumn; in summer bring a hat and water, as there is little shade.
