Overview
This small-group day in Madeira starts in the dark: our driver collects you from your hotel in Funchal or Caniço about an hour and a half before sunrise and climbs to Pico do Arieiro, the island's third-highest summit at 1,818 metres, to watch the sun rise over a sea of clouds. If you wish, you can walk the first stretch of the PR1 trail towards the famous "Stairs of Heaven". Next comes the glass platform at the Guindaste viewpoint high above the north coast, then the main event: a self-guided 7 km hike on the Larano Trail, an old cliff path between Machico and Porto da Cruz. Groups are capped at eight, and you are back at your hotel by early afternoon. It suits fit walkers and early risers.

Full Description
Pico do Arieiro: sunrise on Madeira's third-highest peak
Pico do Arieiro rises to 1,818 metres in the volcanic heart of Madeira and is the highest point you can reach by road. On clear mornings the clouds settle far below the summit, so the first light spills over a white sea broken only by jagged ridges and the neighbouring peaks of Pico das Torres and Pico Ruivo. A white radar dome marks the top, and a short paved path leads to the viewing platforms.
Many visitors ask whether a Pico do Arieiro sunrise tour is worth the early start: on a clear day it is the most memorable hour on the island. Mountain weather changes fast, though, and cloud can hide the sun, so the view is never guaranteed. At dawn the temperature is often close to freezing even in summer, so warm layers matter. You spend about an hour here.
PR1 "Stairs of Heaven": the optional ridge walk
From the summit the PR1 trail, Vereda do Areeiro, follows a knife-edge ridge towards Pico Ruivo, the highest point of Madeira. Our tour gives you the option of hiking roughly 1.2 km of it out to the stretch locals and walkers call the "Stairs of Heaven", where stone steps and railings run along the crest with drops on both sides and views over the deep valleys of Curral das Freiras and Fajã da Nogueira.
Access to the PR trails now requires a small regional fee, paid online in advance or to the forest guard, and it is not included in the tour. Hikers must return within the time given by the driver, usually about 45 minutes after sunrise. If you prefer, simply stay near the vehicle and enjoy the summit views; the short walk is a bonus, not a requirement.
Guindaste viewpoint and its glass platform
On the way down to the north coast the van stops at Miradouro do Guindaste, near Faial in the municipality of Santana. Its name means "crane": a hoist once stood on this cliff to lift goods to and from boats when the coast had no proper harbour. Today a glass-floored platform juts out over the drop, so you can stand above the waves with the Atlantic stretching to the horizon.
From the rail you look across to Penha d'Águia, the huge rock that guards Porto da Cruz, and on clear days east to the bare peninsula of Ponta de São Lourenço. It is a quick stop of around 15 minutes, ideal for photos in the soft morning light, and a good moment to refill water bottles before the main hike of the day.
Larano Trail: the clifftop path from Machico to Porto da Cruz
Vereda do Larano is among the most spectacular coastal walks in Madeira. The path was cut into the cliffs so villagers could travel between Machico and Porto da Cruz before roads reached this coast, and it still clings to steep slopes high above the ocean. From the Boca do Risco pass it threads through heather, eucalyptus and pine, with constant views of the sea, the northern cliffs and Penha d'Águia ahead.
The 7 km route takes about 2.5 hours at a steady pace and is rated moderate: mostly level or gently downhill, but narrow in places with unfenced drops, so it is not for anyone who suffers from vertigo. This part of the day is self-guided; our driver drops you at the start and collects you at the end. Good grip shoes are essential, and if you search for the best hikes in Madeira, this one belongs on the list.
Porto da Cruz and the wild northeast coast
The trail ends above Porto da Cruz, a small village pressed between green hills and the ocean. Its black-pebble shore, a seawater pool carved into the rocks and the dark mass of Penha d'Águia make it a striking finale. Terraces of sugar cane and vines still cover the slopes, a reminder of the farming that shaped this coast for centuries.
The northeast is the wettest and greenest side of Madeira, quite different from the drier south around Funchal. Ocean winds bring regular showers, which is why our van carries rain ponchos. The best time to hike here is spring to autumn, when the path is drier, but the views are dramatic in any season. From Porto da Cruz the drive back to Funchal or Caniço takes about 35 minutes.
