Full Description
Ponta de São Lourenço, the eastern tip of Madeira
Ponta de São Lourenço is a narrow volcanic peninsula that stretches about nine kilometres into the Atlantic from the eastern end of Madeira. It looks nothing like the green, forested interior of the island: strong north winds and a semi-arid climate keep the land almost treeless, so the slopes are covered with low grasses and wildflowers that turn the hills green in winter and golden in summer. Since 1982 it has been protected as a partial nature reserve.
The reserve shelters dozens of rare and endemic plants, including Madeira stock and the island's own viper's bugloss, plus lizards, seabirds and, offshore, the occasional dolphin. Many travellers ask whether Ponta de São Lourenço is worth visiting when Madeira has so many trails. The answer is yes: no other hike on the island gives you open sea on both sides, cliffs streaked with colourful layers of rock and a horizon that reaches Porto Santo and the Desertas Islands.
The PR8 Vereda da Ponta de São Lourenço trail
The PR8 is an official Madeira trail that starts at the end of the road beyond Caniçal and runs out along the spine of the peninsula. The round trip is about 7.5 kilometres, and the altitude stays low, mostly between sea level and about 150 metres, with paved sections, gravel paths, wooden steps and a few rocky passages protected by railings. Most hikers take three to four hours, including photo stops.
Your Ponta de São Lourenço day trip from Funchal follows a simple plan: our driver drops you at the trailhead, explains the route and timings and shares the map, then you hike out and back on your own. There is almost no shade, so sun protection and plenty of water are essential. The trail is popular, which is why permits are now managed by the regional authorities; we handle the reservation so you only need to arrive and walk.
Abra viewpoint, the cliffs and the north coast
About twenty minutes into the walk, the Abra viewpoint opens onto a small sheltered cove with turquoise water and cliffs that drop sharply to the sea. From here the path follows the ridge, and the contrast between the two coasts becomes clear: the north side faces the full force of the Atlantic, with waves breaking against dark basalt walls, while the south side is calmer and brighter.
Look closely at the rock faces and you can read the volcanic history of Madeira: layers of red tuff, grey lava and white limestone sediments, cut by vertical dykes where magma once forced its way up. Fossil sands and old sea caves appear along the way. For photographers, this middle section is the best part of the hike, especially in the first hours after sunrise when the low light brings out the colours of the cliffs.
Casa do Sardinha, the islets and Pico do Furado
The trail ends at Casa do Sardinha, a small ranger station shaded by palm trees, where you can rest, use the facilities and refill on views. Below it lies a little stony cove with a landing stage and very clear water, perfect for a swim on warm days, so bring swimwear and a towel. From here, a steep path climbs to the summit of Pico do Furado for the finest panorama of the whole peninsula.
From the top you look straight down on the two islets at the tip of Madeira: the Desembarcadouro islet, close to the shore, and the Farol islet, crowned by a lighthouse that has guided ships since the 19th century. On clear days the Desertas Islands rise to the south-east and Porto Santo to the north-east. Keep an eye on the time briefed by our driver, as the walk back takes about as long as the walk out.
Caniçal and the east coast pickup towns
The trailhead sits just beyond Caniçal, a fishing village on the eastern coast of Madeira with a colourful harbour and a long maritime tradition; it was once a centre of whale hunting and now has a museum about whales and ocean conservation. Close by is Prainha, one of the rare natural sand beaches on the island, framed by dark volcanic rock.
Pickup is from Funchal, the capital, and from Caniço, Santa Cruz and Machico, the towns along the east coast near the airport. If you are wondering how to get to Ponta de São Lourenço without a car, this shared transfer is the easiest way: buses to Caniçal are infrequent and the last part of the road has no regular service. The drive from Funchal takes about forty minutes along the coastal expressway, with views of the cliffs and the airport runway built over the sea.

Frequently Asked Questions
Straight answers to what travellers ask us most, before they book.

How long does it take?
About six hours in total: around 40 minutes of driving each way and about four hours of free time for the hike, which most people complete in three to four hours.
Is hotel pickup included?

Is the price per person or per group?
The price is per person. The booking panel on this page shows the current price for each departure time.

Children under 12 are not permitted, and the uneven paths and steps make it unsuitable for wheelchair users or anyone with limited mobility.
