Full Description
Hwaseong Fortress, Suwon's UNESCO landmark
Hwaseong Fortress was built between 1794 and 1796 by King Jeongjo, and it is one of Korea's finest examples of fortress architecture, listed by UNESCO in 1997. Its walls run for several kilometres around the old centre of Suwon, with gates, watchtowers and defensive structures that blend military engineering and traditional design.
On this tour you walk part of the wall and see the gates and Haenggung Palace area, where the king stayed. It is easy to see why Hwaseong Fortress is often called one of the best places to visit near Seoul: the views, the gates and the history all in one afternoon.
Starfield Library
The Starfield Library in Suwon is one of the most photographed public spaces in Korea. It is an open, multi-storey library set inside a shopping complex, with huge bookshelves that soar to the ceiling and comfortable seating beneath them.
It has become a popular stop for visitors who want a contrast to the fortress, and it makes a striking photo. Please keep noise low, as it is a working library, and follow any rules on photography posted at the entrance. There is time to browse the shelves and the shops and food areas nearby before the group moves on.
Waujeongsa Temple
Waujeongsa Temple is a calm Buddhist temple in the Suwon area, known for its large reclining Buddha statue and peaceful courtyards. It offers a quiet break from the busier stops of the day.
Walk around the grounds, see the statues and pagoda-style buildings and enjoy the atmosphere. Dress modestly and be respectful, as the temple is an active place of worship. The mix of a quiet temple and a lively modern library shows two very different sides of Suwon and of Korea. A short walk through the temple grounds is often the most relaxing part of a busy day, so take your time and listen to the quiet.
Kimbap, laver and hanbok experiences
The tour includes a hands-on kimbap-making experience, so you learn to roll this favourite Korean snack yourself, and a visit to a museum devoted to laver, the seaweed used in kimbap.
You also try on hanbok, the traditional Korean dress, which is a fun way to take photographs around the fortress. These experiences make the day more active than a simple sightseeing trip. Hanbok colours and patterns often reflect age and occasion, and the guide can explain the details as you dress. Together, the food, craft and costume experiences turn the trip into a hands-on introduction to everyday Korean culture.
