Overview
Learn the Trencadís technique, the broken-tile mosaic that Gaudí made famous on Park Güell and Casa Batlló, in a friendly studio in the El Born area of Barcelona's old town. In the four-hour class shown by default, an English-speaking instructor introduces the tools and materials, then guides you step by step as you cut glazed ceramic and design a larger piece such as a salamander, a frame or a square panel. No experience is needed. The studio team grouts your mosaic afterwards and you collect it later the same day or the next day, a one-of-a-kind souvenir of Barcelona. Shorter classes of one to three hours, including a children's class, are also available. There is no hotel pickup.

Full Description
The Trencadís technique – Gaudí's broken-tile mosaic
Trencadís comes from the Catalan word for broken, and it describes mosaics made from irregular fragments of glazed ceramic, glass or porcelain. Catalan Modernista architects, and Gaudí above all, used it to cover curved surfaces that flat tiles could never follow: the dragon-lizard and the serpentine bench of Park Güell, the shimmering facade of Casa Batlló and the chimneys of La Pedrera. It was also a clever way to reuse broken pieces from tile factories.
In the workshop you learn exactly how it is done: how to score and snap ceramic with a tile cutter, how to choose colours that work together and how to fit fragments with the right gap for grout. Once you have tried it, every Gaudí building you visit in Barcelona looks different, because you notice each tiny piece and the patience behind it.
Your mosaic class in El Born
The studio is in Carrer dels Assaonadors, a narrow medieval street in the El Born and Sant Pere area of the old town, where tanners once worked. In the four-hour class you have time for a larger and more detailed piece, such as Gaudí's famous salamander, a decorated frame or a square panel, using real ceramic and professional tools. The instructor demonstrates each step and helps you with the design, the cutting and the placing of every fragment.
Adults and children aged over 10 work with ceramic; younger children use safe pre-cut acrylic tiles. When you finish, the team applies the grout so your mosaic lasts for years, and you collect it later the same day or the next day if your class is in the afternoon. Many travellers ask what to do in Barcelona on a rainy day, and this indoor class is one of the most rewarding answers.
Other workshop options
Besides the four-hour class, you can choose a three-hour session inspired by the Sagrada Família, a two-hour Trencadís class where you decorate a photo frame, heart, animal or coaster tray, and a two-hour class recreating the Flower of Barcelona, the four-petal pavement tile seen on sidewalks across the city since the early 1900s.
For shorter visits there is a one-hour class decorating a hexagonal tile, created for the Gaudí centenary year in 2026, and a one-hour children's class for ages 3 and over, using pre-cut acrylic pieces to decorate a box top, coaster or frame. All options include the tools, the materials and the grouting of your piece, and every class is guided step by step, so you can simply pick the length and theme that fit your day in Barcelona.
El Born and the old town around the studio
El Born is one of the most atmospheric quarters of Barcelona, a maze of stone lanes, small squares, craft shops and cafés. A few minutes from the studio you find the Gothic basilica of Santa Maria del Mar, the elegant Passeig del Born, the El Born cultural centre, set in the old iron market hall above excavated streets from 1714, and the Santa Caterina market with its wave-shaped roof covered in colourful ceramic tiles, itself a modern take on Trencadís.
Plan to explore the area before or after your class, and come back to collect your finished mosaic. The studio is easy to reach on foot from the Gothic Quarter and from Jaume I metro station on line L4.
