Full Description
Timanfaya National Park and the Fire Mountains
Between 1730 and 1736 a chain of eruptions buried about a quarter of Lanzarote under lava and ash, swallowing farms and whole villages. The result is Timanfaya National Park, protected since 1974: a landscape of rust-red and black craters, frozen rivers of lava and fields of cinder where almost nothing grows. The heart of the park is the Montañas del Fuego, the Fire Mountains, whose slopes still glow in shades of red, orange and violet in the afternoon light.
On this Timanfaya National Park tour the park ticket is already included, so you skip the queue at the entrance and follow the route through the volcanoes with your guide explaining how the eruptions unfolded. Visitors cannot walk freely across the lava, which keeps the landscape untouched. You spend about an hour inside the park, and many travellers say it is the most unforgettable stop of any Lanzarote cruise excursion.
Islote de Hilario and the geothermal displays
At the summit area of the park, Islote de Hilario, the heat of the volcano still lies close to the surface: a few centimetres down the ground reaches around 100 °C, and several metres down it is hot enough to melt metal. Park staff show this with simple demonstrations: dry brushwood pushed into a hole bursts into flames, and a bucket of water poured into a pipe shoots back out seconds later as a roaring jet of steam.
The restaurant on the summit even grills food over a natural vent in the ground, and a viewpoint terrace looks out over a sea of craters towards the coast. Your guide times the visit so you see the demonstrations and still have a few minutes for photos. It is the best place to understand why Timanfaya is called the land of fire.
The Green Lagoon (Charco de los Clicos)
On the west coast, near a small fishing village, the sea has eaten away half of a volcanic crater and left behind a lagoon of startling emerald green. The colour comes from tiny algae and minerals in the water, which seeps in from the ocean through the black sand. Framed by the red and ochre layers of the crater wall and a beach of dark volcanic grit, the Green Lagoon is one of the most photographed views in the Canary Islands.
A short path from the car park leads to the viewpoint above the lagoon; allow about 20 minutes. Swimming in the lagoon is not allowed, as it is a protected natural site, but the walk is easy and the view needs no filter. On the 5-hour option this stop shows a completely different side of the island, where the volcanoes meet the Atlantic.
Monument to the Farmer
In the centre of Lanzarote, near the village of San Bartolomé, a tall white sculpture rises above the plain. Built in 1968 from the old water tanks of fishing boats, the Monument to the Farmer honours the islanders who learned to grow crops on volcanic ash with almost no rain. It stands next to a traditional farmhouse complex with whitewashed walls and green wooden doors, typical of island architecture.
The coach makes a short photo stop of a few minutes here. Your guide explains how farmers survived after the eruptions, carrying ash and digging hollows to reach the old soil below, a story that leads naturally into the next stop. For many visitors this quick halt is the clearest symbol of how Lanzarote turned a disaster into a way of life.
La Geria and its volcanic vineyards
La Geria is a protected landscape of black hills where every vine grows in its own funnel-shaped hollow, dug through a thick layer of volcanic gravel, called picón, down to the fertile earth beneath. A low crescent of stones shelters each plant from the trade winds, and the porous picón traps moisture from the night air, so the vines and fig trees survive on almost no rainfall. Seen from the road, the thousands of dark circles create one of the most unusual farming landscapes in Europe.
The guided stop lasts about 20 minutes, enough to walk among the hollows and take photos. Along the route you can choose an optional camel ride on the volcanic slopes, paid on the spot; camels were once the working animals of island farms. From here the coach returns you to the cruise terminal in Arrecife.

Frequently Asked Questions
Straight answers to what travellers ask us most, before they book.
Is this a shared or a private experience?
It is a shared coach tour with an English-speaking guide, made for cruise passengers. You travel with other guests from the ships in port.
How long does it take?
The default option takes about 5 hours from the 11:30 pickup. The express option visits only Timanfaya and takes about 2.5 hours from 08:35.
Is pickup from the cruise ship included?
Yes. Pickup and return are at the Arrecife cruise terminal; the guide waits about 4 minutes' walk past the police checkpoint.
What is included?
Pickup and return at the terminal, an air-conditioned coach, an English-speaking guide, the Timanfaya National Park ticket, the Green Lagoon, the Monument to the Farmer photo stop, La Geria and travel insurance. Lunch and the camel ride are not included.
Will I be back before my ship leaves?
The tour returns to the terminal about 5 hours after pickup. Book it when your ship stays in port comfortably longer than that, or choose the 2.5-hour express option.
Is the price per person or per group?
The price is per person, with a lower rate for children aged 2 to 11. The booking panel on this page shows the current price of each option.
Is it suitable for children or people with reduced mobility?
Children enjoy the fire and steam demonstrations, and walking is light. The coach has no lift and the paths at the stops are uneven, so it is not suitable for wheelchair users.
What should I bring?
Your cruise card and ID, comfortable shoes, a camera, sunscreen, a hat and water. A light jacket helps on windy days at the summit.
Is Timanfaya worth visiting?
Yes. It is the most striking volcanic landscape in the Canary Islands, and the geothermal displays exist nowhere else on the islands, which is why it is the top excursion from Arrecife.
What is the best time to visit Timanfaya?
Lanzarote is mild all year. Midday light makes the colours of the craters glow, and spring and autumn bring the clearest skies.
What happens in bad weather?
Rain is rare on Lanzarote and the tour runs in normal wind. If the park closes for safety, we contact you to adjust the visit or settle the booking.
How do I book and confirm?
Choose your ship's date in the booking panel and send your request. Our team confirms your booking on WhatsApp within minutes, with the pickup details at the terminal.
