Overview

This real submarine dive leaves from Puerto Calero marina on the south coast of Lanzarote and takes you down to a depth of up to 30 metres to see shipwrecks resting on the seabed and fish swimming freely around them. The cabin stays at normal surface pressure, so there is no pressure on your ears, and large windows on both sides give everyone a clear view. An audio guide with headphones explains what you see in several languages, including English. In the default option a return bus transfer collects you from Costa Teguise, Arrecife or Puerto del Carmen. It is a shared experience of about 1 hour underwater, ideal for families with children from 2 years old, non-divers and anyone curious about the ocean.

Full Description

Puerto Calero marina

Puerto Calero is a small, elegant marina on the south coast of Lanzarote, a few kilometres west of Puerto del Carmen. Built in the late 20th century on a quiet stretch of volcanic shore, it is known for its white buildings, palm-lined promenade, yachts and seafront cafés, and it is the starting point for many boat trips around the island.

Your submarine adventure begins here: after the bus drops you at the marina, a small shuttle boat takes you out to the submarine waiting in deeper water. After the dive you have free time to walk along the harbour and enjoy the views of Fuerteventura across the strait. If you are asking how to get to Puerto Calero by yourself, it is about 15 minutes by car from the airport, but in this option the bus does the work for you.

The submarine dive

This is a true submarine, not a glass-bottom boat. Once everyone is seated, the hatch closes and the vessel descends slowly through layers of blue, reaching depths of up to 30 metres. Because the cabin is kept at normal atmospheric pressure, you feel no change in your ears, and the air stays fresh and comfortable throughout the dive.

Each guest sits beside a large window, so children and adults have the same view. Through the headphones, the audio guide explains the ocean around Lanzarote, the creatures you see and why these ecosystems need protecting. Is the Lanzarote submarine worth it? For families, non-swimmers and anyone who has never dived, it is one of the most memorable ways to see the underwater world of the Canary Islands.

Shipwrecks on the seabed

The highlight of the dive is the visit to shipwrecks lying on the sandy seabed off Puerto Calero. Placed here on purpose to create artificial reefs, the wrecks are now covered with algae, sponges and anemones, and they shelter fish of every size. The submarine moves slowly around them so you can see hulls, decks and openings where fish hide.

The sense of floating beside a sunken ship in silence is something few people ever experience without diving equipment. The captain positions the submarine so both sides of the cabin get a good view, and the audio guide tells the story of each wreck. Bring a camera, but turn the flash off: the natural blue light through the windows gives the best photos.

Marine life of the Canary Islands

The waters around Lanzarote mix warm and cool Atlantic currents, which makes them clear and rich in life. During the dive you may see shoals of silver fish, barracudas, groupers, colourful parrotfish, stingrays resting on the sand, moray eels in the rocks and, with luck, an angelshark, a protected species of the Canaries. The free fish chart helps you identify them.

Water clarity is usually excellent all year, and the best time to visit Lanzarote for this experience is any season, since conditions underwater change little. The dive runs six days a week with several departures, so it fits easily into a holiday plan alongside Timanfaya National Park, the beaches of Papagayo or a sunset cruise from Puerto del Carmen.
