Full Description

The marine reserve of the Bay of Palma

The dive takes place in the marine reserve on the south side of the Bay of Palma, near Cala Blava in the municipality of Llucmajor. Created in 1982, it was the first marine reserve in the Balearic Islands, and fishing and anchoring are tightly controlled, so marine life has had decades to recover. Low limestone cliffs, rocky reefs and sandy patches meet meadows of Posidonia seagrass, the plant that keeps Mallorca's water so clear.

For beginners, the setting is ideal: the water is sheltered, visibility is often excellent and the shallow rocky seabed is full of life within a few metres of the surface. Many people searching for the best place to try scuba diving near Palma want exactly this mix of easy access, calm conditions and real Mediterranean nature, rather than a swimming pool session.

Briefing and shallow-water practice

The experience begins on land with a relaxed briefing. Your instructor explains how the equipment works, how to breathe through the regulator, how to equalise your ears and the hand signals used underwater. No previous experience is required, but you should feel comfortable in the water, and all participants must understand the briefing language well, at about B2 level, for safety reasons.

You then walk into the sea by comfortable steps from the shore and practise in calm, shallow water where you can stand. You try breathing underwater, clearing water from your mask and communicating with signals, one skill at a time and at your own pace. With two instructors for a maximum of six people, each participant gets close attention, and the group moves on only when everyone feels confident.

Your first dive in the reserve

Once you are ready, the instructors lead the group on a guided dive in the protected area, to a maximum depth of 6 metres. This is the moment most people remember: the feeling of weightlessness, the quiet sound of your own breathing and the colours of the seabed. Expect to see small fish such as wrasse, bream and damselfish among the rocks, sea urchins, starfish and the green ribbons of the seagrass meadows.

The dive is calm and controlled, never rushed, and the instructors stay beside you all the time. After the experience you receive an official beginner-diver certificate, which can be credited towards an Open Water course if you decide to continue. Is a discover scuba diving session in Mallorca worth it? For anyone curious about the underwater world, it is the safest and simplest way to start.
