On the way back the boat visits a natural sea cave and anchors in a quiet cove where, weather permitting, you can swim and snorkel. Groups are limited to 12, so everyone has a good view. Full Description
Can Picafort marina, north Mallorca
Can Picafort is a relaxed resort on the long sandy shore of the Bay of Alcúdia, in the north of Mallorca, with shallow turquoise water, pine woods and a seafront promenade. Its small marina and yacht club are the departure point for this trip, and the meeting place is the yacht club's private car park, so getting on board is quick and easy.
If you are staying in Alcúdia, Playa de Muro or Can Picafort, the marina is close by; from Palma, the drive to Can Picafort takes about 50 minutes. The early slot at 07:30 lets you see the sunrise from the water, while the 13:30 trip is warmer for the swim stop. Bring a jacket for the morning breeze at sea.
Dolphin watching off the north coast
Bottlenose dolphins live in the waters around Mallorca all year, and the north-east coast is one of the best areas to see them. Once out at sea, the captain watches for signs such as seabirds feeding or splashes on the surface, then approaches slowly and keeps a respectful distance so the animals behave naturally. Seeing a pod surface, breathe and arc through the water beside the boat is unforgettable.
Dolphins are wild animals, so sightings cannot be guaranteed, but the captain's local knowledge gives you a very good chance. With a group of no more than 12, everyone finds a spot at the rail. Many people looking for dolphin watching in Mallorca choose the north for its calmer, less crowded waters, and this small-boat format is ideal for photos.
The Bay of Alcúdia and Cap de Formentor
From the boat, the whole sweep of the Bay of Alcúdia opens up: long beaches backed by dunes and pine forests, the town of Alcúdia with its medieval walls inland, and the mountains of the Serra de Tramuntana rising in the north-west. On clear days you can make out the dramatic outline of Cap de Formentor, the rocky peninsula at the northernmost tip of Mallorca, with its cliffs dropping into the sea.
These views are part of what makes this trip special even before the dolphins appear. In the early morning the light is soft and golden, and the sea is often flat and glassy. In the afternoon the colours are brighter and the turquoise of the shallows near the coast is at its most intense.
Sea cave and swim stop in a cove
On the way back to Can Picafort, the boat visits a natural sea cave in the low cliffs of the coast, where the water at the entrance takes on deep blue and green tones. Then it anchors in a beautiful cove for a break: if the weather allows, you can jump in to swim and snorkel in cool, clear water before the return to the marina.
Bring beachwear and a towel so you are ready for the swim, plus sunscreen, as there is little shade on a fast boat. Food and drinks are not included, so a bottle of water is a good idea. Is a dolphin watching tour from Can Picafort worth it? With a small group, sunrise views, a cave and a swim in three hours, it is one of the most complete sea outings in the north of Mallorca.
