Full Description

Tabernas village and its Moorish castle

The tour starts in Tabernas, a small white village in the province of Almería, about 30 kilometres north of the city of Almería. Above the houses stand the ruins of a Moorish fortress built in the 11th century, when the area was part of Al-Andalus. Its walls and towers, made of rammed earth and stone, still watch over the valley and the road towards the mountains.

The village gives its name to the Paraje Natural Desierto de Tabernas, a protected natural area of about 280 square kilometres that begins just outside town. If you are wondering how to get to the Tabernas Desert from Almería, drive north on the A-92 motorway for about half an hour; the meeting point on Avenida de las Angustias is easy to find in the centre of the village.

The badlands of the Tabernas Desert

Tabernas lies between two mountain ranges, the Sierra de los Filabres to the north and the Sierra Alhamilla to the south, which block the moist winds from the sea. As a result, it receives very little rain, often less than 250 millimetres a year, and more than 3,000 hours of sunshine. Over time, rare but violent storms have carved the soft rock into a maze of gullies, ridges and sharp crests known as badlands.

From the 4x4 you see the full drama of this landscape: bare, pale hills streaked in grey, ochre and cream, flat-topped mesas and deep canyons that change colour with the light. Is the Tabernas Desert worth visiting? For anyone who loves wild landscapes, it is unlike anywhere else in Europe, and the viewpoints on this tour show it at its most impressive.

Ramblas and the ancient seabed

Much of the route follows ramblas, the wide dry riverbeds that carry water only after heavy rain. Driving along them, your guide explains the geology of the desert: millions of years ago this basin was covered by the sea, and the layers of marl, sand and clay you see in the cliffs are sediments that settled on its floor. Marine fossils can still be found in some rocks.

When the land rose and the sea withdrew, wind and water began to sculpt the soft layers, creating the landscape you see today. The guide uses photos and materials to show how the area looked at different stages. The off-road sections are bumpy but driven at a safe pace, making this Tabernas Desert tour exciting without being extreme.

Desert plants and wildlife

Although it looks empty, the Tabernas Desert is full of life adapted to heat and drought. Tough esparto grass, saltbush and small flowering plants grow in the gullies, several of them found nowhere else in the world. In spring, after rare rains, parts of the desert turn surprisingly green and dotted with flowers.

Wildlife includes lizards, hedgehogs, foxes and birds such as the trumpeter finch, the black wheatear and birds of prey that nest in the cliffs. Most animals are active in the cooler hours, so the afternoon departure often gives better chances of sightings. The best time to visit the Tabernas Desert is in spring and autumn, when temperatures are pleasant and the light is soft.

The western film landscapes

From the 1960s onwards, the Tabernas Desert became one of the most important film locations in Europe. Its canyons, dusty plains and empty horizons looked so much like the American West that dozens of western films were shot here, along with adventure and science-fiction productions. Several film-set villages built for those productions still stand in the area.

On the tour your guide points out the valleys and ridges that appeared on screen and explains how crews worked in the desert. Visits to the film-set villages are not included, but many travellers combine this 4x4 tour with a stop at one of them afterwards, or with a visit to Almería city and its Alcazaba fortress on the same day.
