Overview
This full-day island tour from the north of Mallorca combines four ways to travel through the Serra de Tramuntana in one day. You leave Port d'Alcúdia by coach and climb the mountain road to Sa Calobra, with free time to walk through the rock tunnels to the mouth of the Torrent de Pareis gorge. A boat then carries you along the cliffs of the north-west coast to Port de Sóller, where you board the historic tram to Sóller and finally the vintage wooden train through tunnels and citrus groves. A live guide in English and German coordinates every connection, and the boat, tram and train tickets are included; lunch is not. It is a shared tour that suits travellers who want to see the island's most spectacular scenery without driving.

Full Description
The road to Sa Calobra over the Tramuntana
The Serra de Tramuntana runs along the whole north-west of Mallorca and was listed by UNESCO in 2011 as a World Heritage cultural landscape for its terraces, stone paths and mountain villages. From Port d'Alcúdia the coach climbs past the reservoirs and high valleys below Puig Major, the island's highest peak at 1,445 metres, before reaching one of the most famous roads in Spain.
The road down to Sa Calobra drops about 700 metres in a series of hairpin bends, including a loop where the road curls round and passes under itself, known as the Knot of the Tie. Your experienced driver handles the turns while you take in the views of the cliffs and the sea below. This is the first highlight of any Sa Calobra day trip from the north.
Sa Calobra and the Torrent de Pareis
Sa Calobra is a tiny cove of turquoise water enclosed by towering limestone walls. A short path along the cliff leads through two pedestrian tunnels carved into the rock to the mouth of the Torrent de Pareis, a gorge more than three kilometres long that ends in a pebble beach between walls up to 200 metres high. Few places in the Mediterranean feel so dramatic.
During your free time you can walk to the gorge, take photos from the viewpoints, sit by the water or have a coffee before the boat leaves. Bring comfortable shoes, because the path to the Torrent de Pareis has steps and uneven sections. The best time to visit Sa Calobra is in spring or autumn, when the light is soft and the water still warm.
The boat from Sa Calobra to Port de Sóller
There is no coastal road between Sa Calobra and Sóller, so the sea is the best way to see this wild stretch of coast. The boat follows the foot of the Tramuntana past sheer cliffs, caves and hidden coves that cannot be reached by land, with pine trees growing from the rock and the mountains rising straight from the water.
The crossing ends in Port de Sóller, a horseshoe-shaped natural harbour guarded by two lighthouses. Seen from the sea, the town and the mountains behind it form one of the most beautiful arrivals on the island. If the sea is too rough for the boat from Sa Calobra, the coach takes the group directly to Port de Sóller for a boat ride around its bay instead.
The Sóller tram and the vintage wooden train
From Port de Sóller you ride the historic tram, running since 1913, along the seafront and through orange groves to the centre of Sóller, a valley town known for its citrus trade and Modernist buildings. Then you board the Sóller train, opened in 1912, whose varnished wooden carriages still run on the original line through the mountains.
The train climbs out of the Sóller valley through a series of tunnels, the longest almost three kilometres, and over stone viaducts, with views of terraces of olive, almond and orange trees. Riding the Sóller train and tram on the same day is one of the classic experiences of Mallorca, and on this tour all tickets are arranged for you. After the train, the coach takes you back to the north.
