Full Description
The Caves of Drach, Mallorca's underground wonder
The Caves of Drach open on the edge of Porto Cristo on the east coast of Mallorca and stretch for more than a kilometre and a half under the limestone plateau. Their name means caves of the dragon, and for centuries they fed local legends of treasure and monsters. The four connected chambers were explored and mapped scientifically at the end of the 19th century, and the route opened to visitors soon after.
Today a paved path with soft lighting leads past forests of slender stalactites, columns formed where they meet the stalagmites below, and pools so clear they mirror the ceiling. The guided visit inside lasts about an hour and includes some 300 steps, so comfortable shoes are essential. Booking a Caves of Drach tour with tickets arranged saves you the long queues that form at the ticket office in summer.
Lake Martel and the underground concert
At the deepest point of the route lies Lake Martel, around 115 metres long and one of the largest underground lakes in the world, named after the French cave explorer who mapped it in 1896. Its water is a mix of fresh and sea water that rises and falls with the tide of the nearby coast, and it is perfectly still and transparent.
Visitors take their seats on terraced benches facing the lake. The lights dim, and a small group of musicians glides across the water on illuminated boats, playing classical pieces for about ten minutes in total darkness except for their lanterns. The concert on Lake Martel is the moment everyone remembers from the Caves of Drach, and it is included in your ticket.
The boat crossing of the lake
After the concert you can cross Lake Martel on a traditional wooden boat, a short and peaceful ride that shows the cave from water level, with reflections of the formations doubling every stalactite. The crossing depends on the cave's daily operations and queues, and those who prefer can walk out along the path instead.
The exit leads back to daylight near the visitor area, with a café, shops and gardens. Photography and video are not allowed inside the caves, so enjoy the visit with your eyes and buy a souvenir photo or book at the shop if you wish. Allow a few minutes to let your eyes adjust to the daylight, then meet your guide at the agreed time.
Porto Cristo and the pearl factory
Porto Cristo is a pleasant harbour town built around a narrow natural inlet that ends in a small sandy beach. Fishing boats and yachts share the moorings, and the seafront promenade is lined with cafés and ice-cream shops. During your free time you can stroll to the beach, take photos of the harbour or simply sit in the shade with a coffee.
The tour also leaves time for an optional visit to a pearl factory and showroom in the area, where you can see how the island's famous man-made pearls are crafted. There are no compulsory shopping stops: your guide simply tells you the meeting time back at the coach. How to get to the Caves of Drach without a car is a common question, and this tour solves it in half a day.
