Full Description
Ruzafa and the North Train Station
The tour starts in Ruzafa, the neighbourhood just south of the centre that has become Valencia's creative quarter, with colourful street art, an old covered market, independent cafés and family-run restaurants. Its grid of streets is easy and safe to ride, a gentle warm-up before you head into the busier centre.
A few minutes later you reach the Estació del Nord, the North Train Station, opened in 1917 and one of the most beautiful stations in Spain. Its Valencian Art Nouveau facade is decorated with oranges, orange blossom and mosaics, and the ticket hall inside is lined with ceramic panels and wood. Your guide explains how the orange trade shaped the city's wealth and identity, and you have time for photos of the facade.
Town Hall Square and the Mercado Central
Plaza del Ayuntamiento is the grand square in front of Valencia's Town Hall and the main post office, ringed by early 20th-century buildings with domes and balconies. In March it is the stage for the Fallas festival, when daily firecracker displays shake the square and huge sculptures fill the streets, a tradition UNESCO lists as Intangible Cultural Heritage.
From here you cycle to the Mercado Central, the Art Nouveau market hall of iron, glass and tiles, packed with fruit, vegetables, fish and rice. Your guide stops outside to explain what makes it special and when to come back to shop. The market opens Monday to Saturday from early morning until mid-afternoon, so the morning departure is the best way to see the area at its most lively.
The Silk Exchange, the Cathedral and Plaza de la Virgen
Facing the market stands the Lonja de la Seda, the Silk Exchange, a late-Gothic merchants' hall of the 15th century and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its castle-like walls hide a hall of twisted columns that rise like palm trunks, a symbol of the city's golden age of trade. Through narrow lanes you then ride to Plaza de la Reina and the Cathedral, with its Romanesque, Gothic and baroque doorways and the Miguelete bell tower.
Just behind lies Plaza de la Virgen, the oldest square in the city, built over the forum of Roman Valentia. Here you see the Basilica of the Virgin of the Forsaken and the fountain whose reclining figure represents the river Turia. It is the heart of old Valencia, and your guide shares the stories that make it the favourite meeting place of locals.
Serranos Towers and the Turia Gardens
The Torres de Serranos are the largest surviving gate of the medieval city walls, built at the end of the 14th century to guard the road from the north. Their massive towers and battlements frame one of the classic views of Valencia, and they still mark the start of the Fallas celebrations each year. Your guide explains how the walls once encircled the old town and why so few parts survive.
Beyond the towers you roll down into the Turia Gardens, the city's great green park laid out in the old riverbed after the river was diverted following the 1957 flood. Stone bridges cross overhead, and paths lead past orange trees, palms, sports fields and fountains. Riding the Turia is the highlight of any Valencia bike tour: flat, shaded, traffic-free and full of locals jogging and cycling.
City of Arts and Sciences
At the eastern end of the Turia Gardens rise the white, curving buildings of the City of Arts and Sciences, the symbol of modern Valencia. The complex includes the eye-shaped Hemisfèric with its giant screen, the Science Museum shaped like a whale skeleton, the Oceanogràfic aquarium and the opera house, all set around shallow turquoise pools.
Seen from a bike, the buildings change shape as you ride past, and your guide stops at the best angles for photos and explains how the area was built from the late 1990s onwards. If you want to come back to visit the museums or the aquarium, this is the perfect preview. From here the tour heads back towards Ruzafa to finish where it began.
