Overview
This half-day elephant sanctuary visit takes you into the jungle hills of Kathu, between Patong and Phuket Town, to spend time with rescued Asian elephants in a place where they are never ridden. After a short introduction from your English-speaking guide, you feed the elephants bananas and sugar cane, walk among the free-roaming herd and hear each animal's story. Then comes the fun part: a mud spa with the elephants, followed by bathing and brushing them in the pool. A traditional Thai buffet ends the visit. It is a shared group experience that suits families, couples and first-time visitors. The default option includes return hotel pickup in Phuket with a morning or midday start; another option lets you meet us at the sanctuary.

Full Description
The Elephant Sanctuary in the Kathu Jungle Hills
The sanctuary sits in the forested hills of Kathu, the green interior district that rises behind Patong Beach. Here the elephants live on open jungle slopes rather than in chains or show arenas, and many of them were retired from logging, street begging or trekking camps after Thailand banned commercial logging in 1989 left thousands of working elephants without a role. The sanctuary model replaces riding with feeding, observing and bathing, and visitor fees pay for the food, keepers and vet care each animal needs.
From the hillside you look over thick tropical forest and, on clear days, towards the beaches of the west coast. It is one of the most popular half-day activities in Phuket, and the drive from Patong, Kata or Karon is usually only 20 to 45 minutes. Is an elephant sanctuary in Phuket worth visiting? If you want close but respectful contact with elephants without leaving the island, this is the easiest way to do it.
Meeting and Feeding the Elephants
Your visit begins with a short talk from the guide about Asian elephants: how they live in family herds, why their trunks hold tens of thousands of muscles, and how keepers read their mood from ears, tails and body language. You then receive baskets of bananas and sugar cane and walk out among the free-roaming elephants. An adult Asian elephant eats around a tenth of its body weight every day, so the food disappears quickly and the trunks soon come looking for more.
As you walk, the guide introduces each elephant by name and tells its story, from former working animals to youngsters born in safer conditions. There is plenty of time for photos and gentle contact, always under the eye of the mahouts. This feeding part lasts about an hour and is the moment most guests remember, especially children, who are amazed by the trunk taking a banana straight from the palm.
Mud Spa and Bathing in the Pool
After feeding, you follow the elephants to the mud spa. Elephants roll and throw mud over their backs in the wild because a coat of mud cools the skin, blocks the sun and keeps insects away. Here you help them by scooping up the soft mud and spreading it over their skin, and you will get muddy too, so wear swimwear or clothes you do not mind staining.
Next you walk with them to the bathing pool, step into the water and help wash and brush the mud off while they splash and play. The water is shallow enough for most guests to stand, and the keepers stay beside the elephants the whole time. This is the highlight for many visitors and the source of the best photos of the day. Showers and changing areas are available afterwards, and you can leave dry clothes in the free luggage storage before you start.
Thai Buffet, Timing and Practical Tips
Once you are clean and changed, a traditional Thai buffet is served at the sanctuary, usually with rice, curries, stir-fried vegetables, fried noodles and fresh tropical fruit, plus drinking water. It is a relaxed end to the visit and a good chance to look through your photos before the drive back to your hotel. Allow about three hours at the sanctuary in total, plus transfer time.
Choose the morning pickup if you prefer cooler air and calmer elephants, or the midday pickup to keep your morning free for the beach. Visits run in rain and mild weather, and a light shower rarely spoils the bathing. The best time to visit an elephant sanctuary in Phuket is the dry season from November to April, but the jungle is greenest from June to October. Bring sunscreen, insect repellent, a towel and a passport or a copy for the check-in.

It is a shared group visit: you join other guests at the sanctuary with an English-speaking guide. Your hotel transfer with the default option is also shared.
How long does it take?
About three hours at the sanctuary, plus the drive from and back to your hotel, so plan on four to five hours in total.
Is hotel pickup included?
Yes, with the default option return hotel pickup and drop-off in Phuket are included. Another option without transfer is available if you prefer to meet us at the sanctuary.
What is included?
Hotel transfers with the default option, a professional English-speaking guide, bananas and sugar cane for the elephants, the guided walk, the mud spa and pool bathing, a traditional Thai buffet, drinking water and accident insurance.
Is the price per person or per group?
The price is per person. The booking panel on this page shows the current price of each option, with child rates where they apply.
Is it suitable for children or guests with reduced mobility?
Children love this visit and can take part with an adult. The main paths are manageable, but the mud spa and pool involve uneven, slippery ground, so guests with reduced mobility can feed and watch the elephants while others bathe. It is not suitable for pregnant women.
Do you ride the elephants?
No. This is an ethical sanctuary visit with no riding and no shows; you feed, walk with and bathe the elephants under the mahouts' supervision.
What should I bring?
Swimwear, a change of clothes, a towel, a hat, sunscreen, insect repellent and your passport or a copy. Leave valuables at the hotel; free storage is available at the sanctuary.
Is the morning or midday session better?
The morning session is cooler and the elephants are often more active; the midday session suits late risers and still leaves time for an evening at the beach.
What happens in bad weather?
The visit runs in rain and mild weather, and the bathing is fun even in a shower. If the sanctuary ever has to stop a session for safety, we contact you on WhatsApp to arrange another date or a refund.
Can I swim with the elephants?
Yes, in the sense that you step into the sanctuary pool with them to wash and brush them. It is shallow water, not deep swimming.
How do I book and confirm?
Choose your date and option in the booking panel and pay online. Our team confirms your booking and pickup details on WhatsApp within minutes.
