Full Description
Wat Chalong, Phuket's largest temple
Wat Chalong is the most important Buddhist temple on Phuket and the main stop of this city tour. Locals and visitors come to pay respects to the revered monks Luang Pho Cham and Luang Pho Chuang, who helped the community during the tin miners' uprising of 1876 and who are remembered with statues and a golden relic hall. The compound has several halls, a tall pagoda with a relic, and painted murals on the walls.
If you are searching for a Wat Chalong tour or the best time to visit Wat Chalong, mornings are usually calmer and cooler. Dress modestly with shoulders and knees covered, and remove your shoes before entering the halls. Your guide explains the monk blessing ritual, which you can watch, and the customs of merit-making so you can behave respectfully.
Panoramic viewpoint and the coastal drive
The tour begins with a drive along the island's scenic beach roads to a famous viewpoint above the coast. From here you see the blue Andaman Sea meeting green rainforest, a view that shows why Phuket is called the Pearl of the Andaman. On the current route the stop is Karon Viewpoint, and under the updated route it becomes Khao Rang Hill Viewpoint.
Travellers often ask about the best viewpoints in Phuket and how to reach them without a car. This tour includes one of the most popular in the trip, with transfer and time for photos. Clear mornings give the best colour, so bring sunglasses and a light hat.
Phuket Old Town and Sino-Portuguese shophouses
Phuket Old Town is the heart of the island's history. Its streets are lined with colourful two-storey shophouses in Sino-Portuguese style, built in the tin-mining boom, with arched windows, carved doors and shaded walkways. You walk through with your guide, stopping at the Saeng Tham Shrine, a small Chinese temple, and at spots where local snacks are sold.
If you want to know what to do in Phuket Old Town, this is a good short introduction: photograph the street art, see traditional cafés and galleries, and get a feel for the Chinese, Thai and European influences. Ask your guide for tips on where to come back to in the evening, when the walking streets are livelier.
Cashew nut factory and local stops
Between the temple and the town, the tour stops at a local cashew nut factory for a short guided visit of about 20 minutes. Cashew trees are grown in the Phuket hills, and you can see how the nuts are shelled and roasted and buy a bag as a souvenir if you like.
Such stops are a good chance to see everyday Phuket beyond the beaches. About the Big Buddha: access to the Big Buddha hill site has been restricted by local authorities since September 2024, so it is not part of this route, and the tour focuses on the temple, the viewpoint and the Old Town.
