Overview

This seaside elephant experience takes you to a camp on the Yamu headland in Pa Khlok, on Phuket's quiet north-east coast, where forest runs down to the sea. The highlight is bathing and brushing the elephants in the warm, shallow sea, something few places in Thailand offer. The camp is chain-free with no riding. It is a shared group program of about two and a half hours, suited to families and animal lovers. Full Description

The Seaside Camp at Yamu, Pa Khlok

The camp lies on the Yamu headland in Pa Khlok, a peaceful corner of north-east Phuket far from the busy west-coast beaches. Opened in 2023, it spreads over a natural habitat of around 20 acres of forest that runs right down to the shore, facing the scattered limestone islands of Phang Nga Bay. The elephants live here without chains and are never ridden; the program focuses on care, natural behaviour and education.

Yamu is about 40 minutes by road from Patong and 30 minutes from Phuket Town. How to get to the beach elephant sanctuary in Phuket? With the default option our driver takes care of the transfers; if you meet at the camp, any taxi or ride-hailing app can find it by name. Is a beach elephant sanctuary in Phuket worth it? For the rare chance to see elephants in the sea, it is unlike any other elephant visit on the island.

Herbal Food Workshop and Feeding

The program begins with a short welcome and a briefing on elephant behaviour and safety. Then you join the team in a hands-on workshop, mixing natural ingredients such as fruit, grains and herbs into nutritious food balls that support the elephants' digestion and health. Keepers explain how diet changes as elephants age and why natural supplements matter for animals once used to poor food in trekking camps.

Next you feed the elephants your herbal treats along with fruit and snacks provided by the camp. They take the food gently with their trunks, and the guide shows you where to stand for safe contact and the best photos. Children love this part, and it is a good moment to ask the keepers about each elephant's character and history.

Jungle Walk to the Secluded Beach

With the elephants fed, you set off together on a guided walk through the coastal forest. The trail winds under tall trees and through tropical undergrowth, at the elephants' own pace, with stops while they pull at branches or dust themselves with earth. It is an easy walk, though the ground can be uneven and sandy in places, so wear shoes you can walk and wade in.

The path ends at a secluded beach on the edge of the camp, with views over calm water to the islands beyond. Because the beach is private to the camp, there are no crowds or vendors, just the sound of the waves and the elephants arriving at the shore. Photographers from the camp offer an optional paid photo service here, though your own phone captures the moment well.

Sea Bathing with the Elephants

The highlight comes as the elephants walk into the sea. You follow them into the warm, shallow water to splash, wash and brush their skin while they spray water with their trunks and roll in the waves. Seawater and sand help clean and cool their skin, and the elephants clearly enjoy it. This is the photo most guests take back from Phuket.

Allow about two and a half hours for the full program, plus transfers. Sessions start at 08:15, 10:15 and 12:30; the morning is cooler and the tide is often better for bathing early in the day. The best time to visit is the dry season from November to April, but the camp runs year-round. Use biodegradable sunscreen and insect repellent to protect the sea and the elephants, and bring a change of clothes and a towel.

Which session is best?

The 08:15 session is the coolest and often has the best sea conditions; 10:15 and 12:30 suit a slower morning.

What happens in bad weather?

The program runs in light rain. If heavy weather makes the sea unsafe, the team adapts the activities, and if a session is cancelled we contact you on WhatsApp to rebook or refund.
