Shorter 6-hour and 4-hour options are also available. The vehicle is for your group only, an SUV for up to 4 guests or a minibus for up to 9, with hotel pickup and drop-off, fuel, bottled water and a cold towel included. Full Description
Big Buddha Phuket on Nakkerd Hill
The Big Buddha is the island's best-known landmark: a seated Buddha about 45 metres tall, faced with white Burmese marble, on the summit of Nakkerd Hill between Chalong and Kata. Built through public donations since the early 2000s, it can be seen from much of southern Phuket, and the terrace around it gives sweeping views over Chalong Bay, the islands offshore and the beaches of Kata and Karon.
The road climbs through forest, and your driver waits in the car park while you explore. Allow about an hour for the statue, the smaller shrines and the viewpoint. Shoulders and knees must be covered; sarongs are lent at the entrance. Big Buddha Phuket opening hours run from early morning to early evening, and arriving before 10:00 means cooler air and clearer photos.
Wat Chalong, Phuket's Most Important Temple
Wat Chalong, officially Wat Chaiyathararam, is the largest and most revered Buddhist temple on the island. Its centrepiece is the Grand Pagoda, a tall white-and-gold chedi said to hold a fragment of the Buddha's bone. Inside, three floors of murals tell the life of the Buddha, and a top-floor balcony looks over the temple grounds and the hills around.
Around the courtyard, ordination halls with sweeping orange roofs sit beside a small tower where locals set off firecrackers to give thanks when a wish comes true, so do not be surprised by a sudden bang. Plan about 45 minutes to an hour here. Dress modestly, remove your shoes in the halls and keep your voice low. A Big Buddha and Wat Chalong private tour fits easily into a morning, as the two sites are only about 15 minutes apart.
Karon Beach and the Three-Beach Viewpoint
On the west coast, Karon is a long, wide beach of fine sand that squeaks underfoot, backed by a quieter resort town than Patong. Your driver can stop for a walk on the sand or a swim in the calm months from November to April, when the sea is clear and gentle.
Just south, on the coastal road towards Promthep Cape, the Karon viewpoint is one of the most photographed spots in Phuket. From a small hilltop platform you see three curving beaches in a row, Kata Noi, Kata and Karon, separated by green headlands. It takes only 15 to 20 minutes and is best in the morning light or late afternoon. With a private car you can stop at as many viewpoints as you like without waiting for a group.
Promthep Cape and Nai Harn Beach
Promthep Cape is the southern tip of Phuket, a grassy headland that drops into the Andaman Sea with views of small offshore islands. A white lighthouse stands on the hill, and a shrine nearby is surrounded by elephant figures left as offerings. It is the island's favourite sunset point, so on a Promthep Cape viewpoint tour ask your driver to time your visit for late afternoon, and expect company in high season.
A few minutes away, Nai Harn Beach is a sheltered crescent of white sand between two headlands, with a freshwater lake behind it and fewer buildings than the west-coast resorts. In the dry season the water is calm and ideal for swimming; from May to October waves can be strong and red flags must be respected. Allow about an hour for each stop.
Phuket Old Town
Phuket Old Town grew rich on the tin boom of the late nineteenth century, when merchants from southern China and the Malay Peninsula built rows of pastel Sino-Portuguese shophouses with arched walkways along Thalang, Dibuk and Krabi roads. Today the narrow Soi Rommanee is lined with colourful façades, small museums, Chinese shrines, cafés and craft shops, and street art decorates many walls.
A Phuket Old Town private tour usually means about two hours on foot here while your driver waits nearby. Look for the Peranakan mansions, the Chinese shrines with their incense smoke, and local dishes such as Hokkien noodles and Phuket-style curries in the family restaurants. On Sunday evenings Thalang Road becomes a walking street market. Come in the morning for empty streets and soft light, or late afternoon when the shop lights come on.
Patong, the Liveliest Beach Town
Patong is Phuket's busiest resort, a long sweep of sand on the west coast backed by hotels, shopping centres, markets and restaurants. Many visitors stay here, so it often appears at the start or end of a private day; if you are staying elsewhere, an hour is enough to walk the beachfront, browse the shops or watch the sea from the long sandy shore.
The road over the hills from Kathu to Patong has its own viewpoint looking down on the whole bay, a good photo stop on the way in. Your driver knows where to park and which roads to avoid at busy times. As your Phuket driver for the day, they can also adjust the order of stops so you finish in Patong for dinner or at Promthep Cape for sunset.
