Full Description
Phang Nga Bay and its national park
Phang Nga Bay is a shallow stretch of the Andaman Sea between Phuket and the mainland, scattered with steep limestone towers, sea caves and mangrove forest. Much of it has been protected since 1981 as Ao Phang Nga National Park, and its karst scenery is among the most photographed in Thailand. The national park fee is included in this tour.
The early-bird format matters here: most Phang Nga Bay tours from Phuket leave mid-morning and arrive at the same places together. By setting off at dawn, with a light breakfast and safety briefing at the pier before boarding the speedboat, you reach the main stops in cooler air and calmer light. Monkeys, hawks and monitor lizards are often seen along the way.
Samet Nangshe Viewpoint
Samet Nangshe is a hilltop viewpoint on the mainland side of the bay that overlooks a sweep of mangroves and dozens of forested limestone islets. It became famous after a photographer's pictures spread online, and today it is one of the best places to see the scale of Phang Nga in a single view.
On this tour you spend about an hour at the viewpoint, enough time for photos and to take in the scenery, with the guide pointing out the islands you will visit later by boat. Morning is the best time to visit Samet Nangshe, when the haze is light and the colours are soft. Bring a hat, as the hilltop has little shade once the sun climbs.
Khao Phing Kan, known as James Bond Island
Khao Phing Kan is a pair of leaning limestone islands with a small sandy cove between them, and just offshore stands Koh Tapu, a slender rock needle about 20 metres tall that narrows towards the waterline. The island took the nickname James Bond Island after it appeared in a 1974 spy film, and it is now the best-known stop in Phang Nga.
You have about an hour here to walk the cove, look at the split rock and photograph Koh Tapu from the beach, with time for a swim if conditions allow. Arriving early is the best answer to the question of whether James Bond Island is worth visiting, as the cove is far quieter before the big boats come in.
Lod Nai cave, mangroves and the Koh Panak lagoon
The canoe part of the day takes about 40 minutes. A local paddler guides your canoe under the low arch of the Lod Nai cave and through tangled mangroves, so you can simply sit back and look up at the dripping rock and roots around you. Your guide points out rock formations shaped like animals and the wildlife living in the mangroves.
At Koh Panak a short walk through a cave leads into a hidden inner lagoon surrounded by sheer cliffs, where you may spot monkeys, birds of prey, monitor lizards and other creatures of the marshy terrain. These secret lagoons, called hongs, are one of the natural wonders of the region.
Koh Panyee stilt village
Koh Panyee is a Muslim fishing village built on stilts at the foot of a towering limestone rock, with a golden-domed mosque, narrow wooden walkways and family-run shops selling dried seafood and handicrafts. According to local history, the village was founded by fishing families from Java in the late 18th century, and many residents still work at sea.
You spend about an hour and a half here for lunch and a stroll. Typical dishes are stir-fries and flavourful curries with rice, and a vegetarian menu is available on request. It is a good moment to see daily life on the water. Please dress modestly when walking through the village, out of respect for its residents, and keep some time for the small shops along the main walkway.
Koh Naka Noi: swimming and beach time
The last stop is Koh Naka Noi, a small island with soft sand and calm, warm water on the way back towards Phuket. You have about an hour of free time to swim, relax in the shade or walk along the shore, so pack your swimwear, a towel and sunscreen.
Afterwards the speedboat returns to the pier, and our minivan drives you back to your hotel in Phuket or Khao Lak. The whole day takes about eight hours, so you are usually back by mid-afternoon with the evening free. The water around Naka Noi is usually clear and shallow near the shore, which makes it a relaxed final swim for children and less confident swimmers.
