Full Description

Whitewater rafting on the Song Phraek River

The Song Phraek River runs through the forested hills of Phang Nga province, north of Phuket, and its rapids make it one of the region's favourite rafting rivers. Your day there starts at about 11:00 with a safety briefing and short training, then a 5-kilometre run in an inflatable raft with a river guide steering from the back.

The rapids are lively but suitable for beginners, with calmer stretches where you can look up at the jungle canopy hanging over the banks. Expect to get soaked, so wear swimwear under quick-drying clothes. For many visitors, this is the best rafting day trip from Phuket, as everything from the gear to the park fee is arranged for you.

Jungle zipline and rope bridge

Before lunch you swap the raft for the treetops. The programme includes a jungle zipline and a rope bridge, giving you a bird's-eye view of the forest that the river cuts through. Staff fit your harness and helmet and guide you across, so no experience is needed. The crossing is taken at a gentle pace, and the platforms are a good spot for photos of the forest and the river below.

Children under five cannot take part in the zipline or the rafting. After the activities, you sit down to a traditional Thai lunch with fresh fruit, tea and coffee, the perfect break between the adventure part of the day and the quieter afternoon with the elephants.

The elephant care park: feeding and learning

In the afternoon you move to an elephant care park in the Phang Nga countryside. You are given a traditional mahout shirt and bamboo hat, followed by a short introduction to the park and the basics of elephant care. Then you meet the elephants, learn about their behaviour and history, and help the keepers prepare bananas and sugarcane before feeding them.

The park is entirely cruelty-free: there is no riding, and the keepers do not use hooks, guiding the elephants by their ears instead. If you are looking for an ethical elephant sanctuary day trip from Phuket that also includes adventure, this combination is hard to beat. You can ask the keepers about each elephant's age and story.

Mud spa and river bathing

After a rest, it is time for the elephants' favourite part of the day. You help give them a mud spa, spreading cool mud that protects their skin from the sun and from parasites, then lead them down to the river and help wash the mud away as they splash and spray. Mud bathing is something elephants do naturally in the wild, and watching them roll and throw mud over their backs shows how much they enjoy it. The keepers stay beside the herd the whole time and tell you where to stand.

This is when you will be glad of a change of clothes, as you will certainly get wet. The day closes with another tea and coffee break before the drive back to your hotel.

Getting there from Phuket or Khao Lak

Phang Nga province lies north of Phuket across the Sarasin Bridge, and the drive to the river takes about two hours each way, which is why the day from Phuket lasts about 10 hours. Guests staying in Khao Lak are much closer, so the same programme takes about 6 hours from there.

Pickup is at about 07:30 from Phuket and 08:30 from Khao Lak, and we send the exact time the day before. The best season for rafting is during and just after the rainy months, when the river runs higher, while the drier months from December to April bring easier rapids and sunny afternoons. On the way you pass rubber and palm plantations and the limestone hills typical of the Phang Nga countryside.
