Overview

Combine two of Phuket's favourite adventures with its best-known landmark. On the default option you ride a quad for an hour along jungle and rubber-plantation trails in the hills of southern Phuket, switch to a car for the climb to the Big Buddha and its panoramic viewpoint, then fly between the treetops on an 18-station zipline with a spiral staircase, skateboard line, abseil and sky net walk. Other options cover the quad ride only, with or without the Big Buddha, a shorter quad-and-zipline combination or the zipline alone. It is a shared small-group activity with a professional guide, safety gear and insurance, and transfers from selected areas of Phuket.

Full Description

Quad ride through the jungle and rubber plantations

The adventure starts at the activity base in the hills near Chalong, where you register, put on a helmet and safety gear and ride in a truck to the starting point on the mountain. After a briefing on how to ride and the safety rules, your guide leads the group along a natural track through rubber plantations and patches of rainforest.

The terrain is simple to handle, with gentle climbs, a few muddy dips after rain and views opening between the trees. Rubber is one of Phuket's traditional crops, and you will see the neat rows of trees with collecting cups on their trunks. This is the best way to answer how to combine a Phuket ATV tour with sightseeing in one half day.

The Big Buddha on Nakkerd Hill

On the options of one hour or more, you switch from the quad to a car for the final climb to the Big Buddha, the island's most recognisable landmark. The seated statue rises about 45 metres on the summit of Nakkerd Hill and is faced in white marble that glows in the sun. Construction began in the early 2000s, and the site remains an active Buddhist temple with monks, prayer bells and offerings.

Because it is a place of worship, shoulders and knees must be covered; strapless tops, tank tops and crop tops are not allowed, and the company does not provide cover-ups, so bring a shirt and trousers or a sarong. Many travellers search for Big Buddha Phuket opening hours, and visiting with this tour removes the need to plan transport up the hill.

The Big Buddha viewpoint

From the terraces around the statue the view spreads in almost every direction: Chalong and its pier to the east, the beaches of Kata and Karon to the west and the islands of the Andaman Sea on the horizon. It is one of the most photographed panoramas in Phuket and the highlight of the longer quad options.

The best time to visit the Big Buddha is in the morning, when the air is clearer and the marble is bright, or in the late afternoon for softer light. On this tour the 08:30 and 14:30 starts give you those conditions, while the 12:00 slot fits a beach morning. Take a moment to walk around the base of the statue, where smaller shrines and bells line the terraces.

The treetop zipline course

On the default option the day ends in the treetops. Staff take you to the starting point on the mountain and lead you one by one through 18 stations built high in the jungle canopy, including a spiral staircase, a skateboard line, an abseil and a sky net walk. The shorter combination uses a 10-station course whose longest line is 200 metres.

Every rider is clipped in and checked by the staff at each platform, and helmets and raincoats are provided. Afterwards you relax with a soft drink and a cold towel at the base before the car takes you back to your hotel. It is a great choice if you are wondering whether to do an ATV or a zipline in Phuket, because here you do not have to choose.
