Full Description
Wat Chalong: Phuket's Most Revered Temple
Wat Chalong, officially Wat Chaiyathararam, is the largest and most important Buddhist temple in Phuket and the first stop for anyone asking what to see on the island. Its tall Grand Pagoda is said to hold a bone fragment of the Buddha, and its upper floors are decorated with wall paintings that tell the story of his life, alongside rows of gilded statues.
The temple honours two respected monks who cared for the injured during the tin miners' uprising of 1876, and you will often hear firecrackers set off by worshippers giving thanks. Entry is free and the grounds are open from early morning until about 5 pm. Plan around 40 minutes here on this Wat Chalong visit: enough to climb the pagoda, admire the murals and walk the gardens. Shoulders and knees must be covered.
The Big Buddha on Nakkerd Hill
The Big Buddha is the island's most recognisable landmark: a seated figure about 45 metres tall, covered in white Burmese marble that shines in the sun, set on Nakkerd Hill between Chalong and Kata. Smaller statues, temple bells and prayer flags surround it, and from the terraces you look over Chalong Bay, the southern beaches and the green interior of the island.
The site is still being completed through donations, and visitors can write a wish on a small marble tile that becomes part of the work. Is the Big Buddha worth visiting? Even if you have only one afternoon, yes: the views alone make the climb by road worthwhile. Big Buddha opening hours are usually from 8 am to early evening, entry is by donation, and a sarong is available if you need to cover up.
Viewpoint and Local Producers: Cashews, Honey and Pearls
The tour starts at a coastal viewpoint in the south of the island, where the bays and headlands of the Andaman coast open up below you, a perfect first photo stop. From there you visit three small producers that show another side of Phuket.
At the cashew nut factory you see how the nuts, a long-standing local crop, are shelled, baked and flavoured by hand, and you can try the juice of the cashew fruit, which few visitors know is edible. A honey farm introduces the bees and the honey of southern Thailand, and the pearl factory explains how Phuket pearls are cultured, from choosing the oysters to the careful farming that produces a quality pearl. Each stop lasts around 20 to 30 minutes, with no obligation to buy.
Phuket Old Town and Its Sino-Portuguese Streets
Phuket Town grew rich in the 19th century on tin mining, when merchants from southern China and the Malay world built rows of elegant shophouses mixing Chinese and European styles. Today the streets around Thalang Road, Dibuk Road and Soi Romanee are painted in pastel colours, with carved shutters, arched five-foot walkways, small shrines, cafés and street art.
The Phuket Old Town tour stop gives you time to walk these streets, photograph the facades and feel the Peranakan heritage that makes the town so different from the beach resorts. It is also the place to try local snacks such as Hokkien-style noodles or sweet roti. The guide points out the main streets and lets you explore at your own pace before the evening market.
Phuket Night Market: Street Food and Souvenirs
The tour ends at one of the island's favourite night markets, which changes with the day of the week: Chillva Market from Monday to Friday, the Naka Weekend Market on Saturday and the Phuket Walking Street along Thalang Road in the Old Town on Sunday. Each one fills with food stalls, music and handmade goods as the sun goes down.
This is the moment to eat like a local: grilled satay, pad thai cooked in front of you, fresh spring rolls, mango sticky rice, coconut ice cream and tropical fruit shakes. You can also browse clothing, crafts and souvenirs. Food and shopping at the Phuket night market are at your own cost, which lets you choose exactly what you want. After the market, the vehicle takes you back to your hotel.
