Full Description

Khao Sok National Park

Khao Sok National Park protects a huge area of evergreen rainforest in the mountains of Surat Thani province, about two hours' drive from Khao Lak. Founded in 1980, it is famous for its dramatic limestone peaks, deep river valleys and rich wildlife, from gibbons and hornbills to the rare giant rafflesia flower, whose blooms can be almost a metre across.

A Khao Sok day trip from Khao Lak is the easiest way to see the park without moving hotels, as the drive, fees and boat are all arranged. The road climbs through rubber and palm plantations before the forest closes in, and your guide explains the park's history and ecology along the way. The national park fee is included in this tour.

Nam Rad Emerald Pool

The first stop is the Nam Rad Emerald Pool, a jungle stream fed by underground springs whose water is so clear that you can see every pebble on the bottom. Shaded by tall trees, the pool glows green and turquoise in the morning light and stays refreshingly cool even on the hottest days.

You have time for a swim and photos before continuing to the lake, usually about 30 to 45 minutes. Wear swimwear under your clothes and bring a towel. The water is calm and shallow at the edges, so children can paddle with an adult. It is a peaceful, little-known spot that many visitors say is one of the surprise highlights of the day.

Cheow Lan Lake by Longtail Boat

Cheow Lan Lake was created in 1982 when a dam was built across the Khlong Saeng river, flooding a valley in the heart of the park. Today its emerald water winds for kilometres between sheer limestone karsts that rise hundreds of metres straight out of the lake, draped in jungle and often wrapped in morning mist.

From the dam pier, a longtail boat carries you deep into the lake, weaving between islands and cliffs on one of the most beautiful boat journeys in Thailand. Look out for hornbills, eagles and monkeys along the shores. The best time to visit Cheow Lan Lake is from December to April for clear skies, though the green season brings lush scenery and fewer visitors.

Cave Visit Inside Khao Sok

Part of the boat journey includes a cave visit inside the national park. After landing, a short forest walk leads to the cave entrance, where your guide lights the way through chambers filled with stalactites, stalagmites and rock formations shaped over thousands of years by water seeping through the limestone.

The walk is easy to moderate, with some uneven ground and steps, so sturdy sandals or shoes with grip are recommended. The guide chooses the cave and the route according to water levels and the season, keeping everyone safe. Allow about an hour for the walk and cave together, a fascinating contrast to the open water of the lake. Bring a small torch if you have one.

Lunch, Swimming and Kayaking on the Lake

Lunch is served on the lake, usually at a floating raft restaurant with wide views of the karsts and the water. Thai dishes, water and soft drinks are included, and fruit shakes can be bought at the restaurant if you wish. It is a relaxed break in a truly special setting, far from roads and towns.

After lunch you have free time to swim straight from the floating platforms or take out a kayak and paddle along the quiet shore, with the cliffs towering above you. Life jackets are available for swimmers. Is Cheow Lan Lake worth visiting? For anyone who loves nature, it is one of the most memorable days you can spend in southern Thailand.
