Full Description
Surin Islands National Park
The Surin Islands lie about 60 kilometres off the coast in the far north of the Andaman Sea, just south of the maritime border with Myanmar. Protected as a national park since 1981, the group is made up of two main forested islands and several smaller ones, ringed by fringing reefs that are among the richest and best preserved in Thailand.
Because the islands are farther from the busy resorts, they receive far fewer visitors than better-known spots, so the beaches and reefs feel calm and natural. The islands are also known for the Moken, a seafaring community whose traditional boats can be seen in the area. The park is usually open from mid-October to mid-May and closes during the monsoon.
The Journey from Khao Lak
After an early pickup from your hotel, the drive north along the coast to the pier takes about an hour, passing rubber plantations, mangroves and small fishing towns. At the pier the guide gives a safety briefing and fits life jackets and snorkelling equipment before you board the speedboat.
The crossing to the islands takes roughly an hour and a quarter across open sea, depending on conditions. A Surin Islands day trip from Khao Lak is a long day of about 12 hours, but most travellers agree the clear water and quiet reefs are worth the early start. If you tend to get seasick, take a remedy before departure and sit near the back of the boat.
Snorkelling the Coral Reefs
The heart of the day is snorkelling. The reefs around the Surin Islands begin in very shallow water close to the beaches, so even beginners can float above gardens of hard corals, giant clams and sea fans. Parrotfish, angelfish, butterflyfish, clownfish in their anemones and schools of fusiliers are common, and lucky snorkellers may spot turtles or blacktip reef sharks.
The guide chooses the snorkelling spots on the day according to tides, currents and visibility, usually spending around 45 minutes to an hour at each. Life jackets make it easy for weaker swimmers, and the guide stays close to help. Is the Surin Islands trip worth it for snorkelling? For many visitors it is the best snorkelling day of their trip to Thailand.
Beach Lunch and Swimming Stops
Around midday the speedboat pulls up at a quiet white-sand beach in the national park for lunch. Thai dishes and a variety of drinks are served in the shade, and there is time to swim in the calm turquoise water, rest under the trees or walk along the shore before the afternoon stops.
After lunch the trip continues with more snorkelling and swimming stops, each one revealing different reefs and colours. The best time to visit the Surin Islands is from December to April, when the sea is calmest and visibility can exceed 20 metres. In the late afternoon the speedboat returns to the pier and our driver takes you back to your hotel.
