Full Description

Bamboo Rafting on a Rainforest River

The tour begins inland from the coast, where a clear river winds through thick tropical forest at the foot of the Khao Lak hills. Here you step onto a long raft made from lashed bamboo poles, steered by a local raftsman with a pole at the front. The current is gentle, so there is no paddling to do; you simply sit back and watch the jungle drift by.

Look out for kingfishers, butterflies, monkeys in the trees and giant bamboo arching over the water. The ride usually lasts 20 to 30 minutes and is one of the most peaceful ways to see the rainforest. Khao Lak bamboo rafting suits all ages, and your guide keeps an eye on smaller children. Expect your feet to get wet and keep phones in a waterproof bag.

Elephant Camp: Feeding and Bathing

Next comes the elephant camp, set in the forest nearby. The keepers introduce their elephants and explain how they care for them each day. You can offer bananas and sugarcane by hand, feeling the strength and surprising gentleness of the trunk as it takes the food, which is always a favourite moment with children.

Then the elephants head to the water and you can help wash them with buckets and brushes, or simply watch them splash and spray. Wear clothes that can get wet and muddy, and bring a change for afterwards. For many families, elephant bathing in Khao Lak is the highlight of their holiday and a memory that lasts far longer than any day at the pool.

Ton Pling Waterfall

Between activities, the group stops at Ton Pling Waterfall, a small cascade hidden in the forested hills of Phang Nga province. Water tumbles over moss-covered rocks into a shallow pool shaded by tall trees, creating a cool, calm spot to rest after the elephant camp. Short paths lead to the best viewpoint for photos.

You spend around 20 to 30 minutes here to stretch your legs and cool off. The waterfall is at its fullest during and just after the rainy season, from June to November, while from December to April the flow is lighter and the pool calmer. Rocks can be slippery, so wear sandals or shoes with grip and take care near the water.

Sea Turtle Conservation Centre

After lunch and fresh fruit, the tour visits the Sea Turtle Conservation Centre near Thap Lamu, south of Khao Lak. The centre protects eggs collected from nesting beaches along the coast and raises young turtles in shaded pools until they are strong enough to be released into the Andaman Sea, improving their chances of survival.

You can walk around the pools, see green and hawksbill turtles of different ages, and learn why turtles need protection from plastic pollution, fishing nets and beach development. Plan about 30 to 45 minutes here. It is a gentle, educational end to the tour that children especially love, and entry is included in the day.
