Full Description

Wat Suwan Khuha Cave Temple

The day begins at Wat Suwan Khuha, whose name means the heavenly cave temple. Set at the foot of a limestone hill near the town of Phang Nga, the temple fills a series of caverns lit by shafts of daylight. In the largest chamber lies a great reclining statue about 15 metres long, surrounded by smaller gilded images, while stalactites hang from the ceiling above.

Steps lead deeper into upper caves with views out through openings in the rock. Troops of macaque monkeys gather near the entrance, so keep food and bags closed. Plan about 30 to 40 minutes here. Entry is included in this tour, and as an active temple it asks for respectful dress: shoulders and knees covered, with hats removed inside.

Longtail Boat Cruise Through Phang Nga Bay

From the pier, a traditional longtail boat carries you along winding mangrove channels where mudskippers and crabs scurry among the roots and eagles circle overhead. Then the river opens out into Phang Nga Bay, a protected marine national park since 1981, where countless jagged limestone islands rise straight out of calm, green water.

The longtail weaves between the islands, past sea caves, overhanging cliffs and hidden coves, giving you a close, open-air view that bigger boats cannot match. The best time to visit Phang Nga Bay is from November to April, when the sea is calm and skies are clear, but the protected waters stay pleasant even in the green season. A Phang Nga Bay tour from Khao Lak is a true highlight of the Andaman coast.

Khao Phing Kan and Ko Tapu

The most photographed stop of the day is Khao Phing Kan, a pair of limestone hills that lean against each other, split by a narrow gap. The boat lands at a small beach where you can walk around the rocks, explore a little cave and find the classic viewpoint across the water to Ko Tapu, whose name means nail island.

Ko Tapu is a slender limestone pillar about 20 metres high that seems to balance in the sea, narrower at its base than at the top after centuries of erosion by the tides. Boats are not allowed to land on it, which keeps it protected. Spend about 40 minutes here for photos; arriving earlier in the day helps you enjoy it with fewer crowds.

Koh Panyi Stilt Fishing Village

Lunch is served in Koh Panyi, a fishing village built almost entirely on stilts over the water in the shelter of a towering rock. Founded by seafaring families centuries ago, it is a Muslim community with its own mosque, school and narrow wooden lanes lined with houses, small shops and restaurants. The village restaurants serve halal seafood and Thai dishes.

After lunch you have time to wander the boardwalks, see the famous floating football pitch, and browse handicrafts and dried seafood. The calm daily rhythm of the village is a lovely contrast to the dramatic scenery outside. Dress modestly out of respect for the community, then rejoin the boat for the cruise back to the pier and the drive to Khao Lak.
