Full Description

Dune drive across the Abu Dhabi desert

Your evening starts with an afternoon pickup from your hotel in Abu Dhabi city. The road leads inland past farms and ghaf groves until the sand takes over, and at the edge of the dunes our driver lowers the tyre pressure before heading off-road. The dune drive climbs and descends the slopes in long, controlled slides, a desert off-road ride that is exciting without being reckless, and the small group means everyone gets a window seat.

This is the most active part of the evening and lasts around half an hour, with stops on the crests for photos. Seat belts stay on throughout, and the driver can take a gentler line if anyone feels uneasy. Because the group is limited to seven, the drive feels personal, and your guide has time to explain how the dunes shift with the wind.

Camel farm visit

Camels are at the heart of Emirati heritage, and a camel farm visit shows how they are still raised today. Herds of mothers and young camels gather in sandy enclosures, handlers prepare racing camels for the winter season, and you learn how camel milk, once vital for desert families, is now a prized local product. The young camels are curious and often come right up to the fence.

The farm stop is relaxed and great for photos, especially in the soft late-afternoon light. Your guide explains the different breeds, how racing camels are trained and why camels can go days without water. It is one of the best parts of this Abu Dhabi safari for children and for anyone who has never seen camels up close.

Sunset over the dunes

As the afternoon fades, our driver takes the group to a high ridge to watch the sunset. The sand changes colour from gold to deep orange and then rose, the shadows between the dunes grow long, and the desert falls silent apart from the wind. It is the moment most guests remember best, and the reason an Abu Dhabi sunset safari is so popular.

Sunset in Abu Dhabi falls between about 5:30 pm in winter and 7:10 pm in summer, and pickup times are set so that you reach the dunes in time. Bring your camera or phone fully charged: silhouettes on the crest, wide panoramas and portraits in the warm light are all at their best here.

Traditional desert camp

After dark you arrive at a traditional desert camp laid out with low majlis seating, carpets and cushions around a central stage. You are welcomed with Arabic coffee poured from a brass dallah, dates and local sweets, the same gesture of hospitality still offered at every Emirati majlis and family gathering today. The camp is lit by lanterns, and the desert sky opens above you.

Before dinner there is time for the camp activities included in this desert camp in Abu Dhabi: a short camel ride for photos, sand skiing down a nearby slope and henna painting with traditional floral patterns. Shisha is available in the camp for those who wish. Your guide stays with the group and helps you make the most of each activity.

BBQ dinner under the stars

Dinner is a halal Arabic BBQ served at the camp: grilled chicken and lamb, kofta, rice, fresh breads, salads, hummus, moutabal and other mezze, with vegetarian dishes and fruit. You eat in the open air, under a sky that is far darker and clearer than in the city, and the cool desert evening makes it one of the most enjoyable meals of a trip to the Emirates.

Live entertainment follows during and after dinner, with a belly dance show and traditional music. Dance shows are not held during Ramadan and on some religious days, when the camp offers a quieter evening. You return to your hotel in Abu Dhabi city at around 10:00 pm, about seven hours after pickup.
