Full Description

Dune Bashing in the Abu Dhabi Desert

Beyond the last suburbs of the capital, the land gives way to wave after wave of red and golden dunes. This is where the Abu Dhabi desert safari begins: your driver lowers the tyre pressure and takes the 4x4 up, over and along the crests in a roller-coaster ride known as dune bashing, with the sand spraying around the windows.

The drivers are experienced and the vehicles are fully insured and fitted with roll cages, seat belts, GPS and first aid kits. The ride lasts around 30 to 45 minutes with photo stops on top of the dunes, where the silence and the endless views are as memorable as the thrill. If you are sensitive to motion, sit in the front and tell the driver, who can keep the pace gentler.

Camel Farm, Sunset and Quad Biking

On the way the safari stops at a camel farm, where herds are raised for racing, milk and breeding. It is a chance to see the animals up close in their everyday setting and learn why the camel has been at the heart of Emirati desert life for centuries.

As the sun gets lower, you stop on a high dune to watch it set over the desert, the best time of day for photos. Then it is your turn to drive: a 10-minute quad bike ride on the soft sand, followed by sandboarding down the slopes. The quad ride is at your own responsibility, so follow the instructions and ride at a comfortable speed.

The Traditional Desert Camp

Your evening continues at a traditional Arabian desert camp, laid out with carpets, cushions and low tables around a central stage, lit by lanterns as night falls. You are welcomed with Arabic coffee, the lightly spiced gahwa poured from a brass pot, along with tea, dates and soft drinks.

The camp is full of things to try: a short camel ride around the camp, a henna design painted on your hand, photos in traditional Emirati dress and with a trained falcon, the national bird of the UAE. Shisha is available for those who wish. It is a relaxed, sociable place where families and friends spend the evening at their own pace.

BBQ Dinner, Shows and Stargazing

Dinner is a traditional Arabic BBQ served at the camp, a hearty meal after an evening in the dunes. Meanwhile the stage comes alive with a Tanoura performance, in which the dancer spins for minutes on end in a whirl of coloured skirts, and a belly dance show. During Islamic holidays the dance performances are not held.

When the shows end, the lights are dimmed for a few minutes of stargazing, sitting quietly in the dark desert, far from the city glow. On a clear night the sky is full of stars and constellations. Afterwards the 4x4 drives you back to your hotel or drop-off point in Abu Dhabi, completing an experience of about 6 hours.
