Full Description

Yas Marina Circuit and the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix

Yas Marina Circuit opened in 2009 and that November staged the first Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, the first Formula 1 race to start in daylight and finish under floodlights. Since then it has usually hosted the final round of the F1 season. A 2021 redesign reshaped the layout to about 5.3 kilometres with faster corners, and the track runs past a marina filled with superyachts on race weekends.

The best-known sight is the hotel that straddles the circuit, its roof a curving grid of glass panels that glows with changing colours at night. Joining a Yas Marina Circuit guided tour is the only way to see the venue up close outside race week, and our guide explains how the track was built on what was once flat, empty island.

Yas Central, the Race Cars and the North Grandstand

The tour begins at Yas Central, the circuit's main building, where the racing school's programmes are showcased. Here you see the different cars that use the track, from training single-seaters to a recent Formula 1 car, and hear how drivers progress from karting to the top level. Children and adults alike tend to linger over the cockpits and tyres.

Next, the bus takes you to the North Grandstand to see the race from the fans' angle, looking along the straight toward the marina and the hotel. This is a favourite photo spot on the Yas Marina Circuit tour. Allow about two hours in total for the visit, and wear closed shoes: sandals and heels are not allowed on the circuit.

The Pits, the Garages and the Podium

When no event is running, the bus continues on the track itself, passing the Drag Strip, the Kartzone, Shams Tower and the Yas Marina viewpoint. The highlight for many visitors is the pit lane, where you step into the F1 team garages and learn how the crews prepare the cars and change all four tyres in a few seconds during a race.

You also stand on the podium where Grand Prix winners have celebrated their victories, and the photo there is one of the most shared souvenirs of any Abu Dhabi sightseeing day. Because the circuit is busy with events, the exact route can change on the day; our guide always shows you as much of the track as schedules allow.

Yas Island: Planning Your Day Around the Tour

Yas Island is Abu Dhabi's leisure island, about 25 minutes by car from the city centre and around an hour from Dubai. Besides the circuit it holds Ferrari World, Yas Waterworld, Warner Bros. World, SeaWorld Yas Island and the large Yas Mall, so it is easy to combine the tour with a theme park or a shopping afternoon.

How to get to Yas Marina Circuit: taxis and ride-hailing cars drop off at Yas Central, and a free Yas Express shuttle links many island hotels and attractions. The best time to visit Yas Island is from November to March, when outdoor temperatures are mild. Book the circuit tour for the morning and you still have the afternoon free for the parks.
