Overview
This Abu Dhabi morning desert safari is a shared 4x4 trip into the golden dunes of the Al Khatim desert, about 45 minutes from the city. Our professional driver collects you from your hotel, lets the tyres down at the edge of the sand and takes you dune bashing for 30 to 40 minutes. You then try sandboarding, stop for photos across the open dunes, ride a camel and, in this default option, drive your own quad bike on the sand. The trip takes about four hours including transfers, so you are back in time for lunch. It suits active travellers, couples and families with children aged three and over. Afternoon departures run too, and options without the quad or with a private 4x4 are also available.

Full Description
Al Khatim desert: the dunes near Abu Dhabi
The Al Khatim desert lies inland from Abu Dhabi along the road towards Al Ain, a 45-minute drive from the city that leaves the towers behind for open sand. Here the dunes are golden to soft orange, rising in long ridges dotted with ghaf trees and desert shrubs, and the area is quieter than the busy safari zones closer to Dubai. In the morning the sand is cool, the light is low and the tracks of desert foxes, birds and beetles from the night are still visible.
An Al Khatim desert safari is the classic way to experience the Abu Dhabi desert in a short time. At the edge of the dunes your driver lowers the tyre pressure for grip on the sand, and from here the morning runs between the 4x4, the sandboarding slope, the camel and the quad bike area, all within the same stretch of desert.
4x4 dune bashing
Abu Dhabi dune bashing is the heart of the safari: for 30 to 40 minutes your driver takes the air-conditioned 4x4 up steep slopes, along the crests and down sandy drops, sliding sideways in a controlled way that makes the whole car cheer. The drivers are trained for desert driving and know the dunes well, and every passenger wears a seat belt throughout.
The ride is thrilling but bumpy, so it is not suitable for pregnant travellers or anyone with back problems, and children under three cannot ride in the shared car during dune bashing. If you feel uneasy, tell the driver and he will take a gentler line. Eat lightly before the trip: a heavy breakfast two or three hours before is not a good idea.
Sandboarding and desert photo stops
Sandboarding is the easiest board sport you will ever try. Your driver stops at the top of a smooth dune, shows you how to stand or sit on the board and lets you glide down the slope as many times as you like. Sports shoes help on the climb back up, and the soft sand makes falls harmless and funny.
Several photo stops follow along the ridges, where the dunes roll to the horizon and the morning light draws sharp shadows across the sand. These are the best moments for family photos, wide panoramas and silhouettes on the crest. Ask your driver for the best angles: drivers know where the dunes look most dramatic at each time of day.
Camel ride in the Abu Dhabi desert
For centuries camels were the only way to cross this desert, carrying families, water and goods between the oases of Al Ain and the coast. A short camel ride gives you a taste of that slower world: the camel kneels for you to climb on, rises in two lurching steps and then walks calmly across the sand while you take in the silence of the dunes.
The ride is short and gentle, suitable for most ages; children under 12 ride with an adult. It is also one of the best photo moments of the morning, with the golden dunes behind you. If you are looking for a camel ride in Abu Dhabi without a full evening programme, this morning safari is one of the simplest ways to fit it into your day.
Self-drive quad bike ride
In this default option you also take the controls of your own quad bike on a marked desert track. After a short safety briefing and a helmet fitting, you ride across the sand at your own pace, following the guide along the dunes and feeling the engine work on every climb. It is the most hands-on part of the morning and a favourite with adventure lovers.
Quad biking is a self-drive activity undertaken at your own risk, and the activity provider's insurance does not cover it, so travel insurance is recommended. Young children cannot drive alone. If you prefer to skip it, the booking panel also shows a cheaper shared option without the quad bike and a private 4x4 option for your group.
