Full Description
The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque: History and Architecture
The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque was the vision of Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the founding father of the United Arab Emirates, who wanted a mosque that would unite the diversity of the Islamic world. Built between 1996 and 2007, it combines Mughal, Moorish and Arab architectural styles, with 82 domes, four minarets about 107 metres high and more than 1,000 columns.
Sheikh Zayed is buried in a courtyard beside the mosque, and many visitors pause there quietly. The mosque can welcome more than 40,000 worshippers at once. A Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque guided tour helps you read the details, from the lunar-cycle lighting on the facade to the reasons behind its pure white marble.
The Main Prayer Hall: Carpet and Chandeliers
The main prayer hall holds one of the largest hand-knotted carpets in the world, about 5,600 square metres, woven by around 1,200 artisans and brought to the mosque in sections. Its green and cream floral pattern is so fine that the joins are almost invisible, and the pile was designed so that worshippers kneel in neat lines.
Above it hang seven chandeliers decorated with crystals, gold and coloured glass; the largest weighs around 12 tonnes. The walls show floral inlays of marble, mother-of-pearl and semi-precious stones, and the qibla wall lists the 99 names of Allah in calligraphy. Is the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque worth visiting? For many guests it is the most moving sight in the Emirates.
The Courtyard and Reflecting Pools
The central courtyard, paved with marble and set with floral mosaic designs, is one of the largest of its kind in the world. Around the mosque, long reflecting pools of dark tiles mirror the arches and domes, which is why photographers love the golden hour here, when the stone turns from white to soft gold.
Arcades lined with columns inlaid with mother-of-pearl vines surround the courtyard and give shade on hot days. Your guide shows you the best viewpoints and explains the etiquette for photos. The best time to visit the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is the morning or late afternoon, when it is cooler; Friday visits for tourists begin only after the midday prayer.
The Drive from Dubai to Abu Dhabi
Abu Dhabi, the capital of the UAE, lies about 140 kilometres south-west of Dubai along the Sheikh Zayed Road and the coastal motorway. The drive takes around an hour and a half each way, passing the port of Jebel Ali, desert stretches and the new districts on the edge of Abu Dhabi.
Travelling in a small shared group with hotel pickup is the easiest way to plan a day trip to Abu Dhabi from Dubai, since you avoid parking and timing worries at the mosque. Along the way your guide introduces the story of the Emirates, from pearl diving and trade to the union of the seven emirates in 1971.
