Full Description
Red Dunes Drive and Desert Wildlife
The safari starts with a drive from the city into the rolling red dunes on the edge of Dubai, about 45 minutes from most hotels. Your guide stops at scenic viewpoints where the setting sun turns the sand golden, and explains how the Bedouin read the landscape for water, grazing and shelter. This is a calm drive focused on views and wildlife, not on high-speed dune bashing.
Keep your eyes open for Arabian oryx, the white antelope with long straight horns that was once extinct in the wild and has been brought back through breeding programmes, as well as Arabian and sand gazelles darting between the ghaf trees and desert shrubs. Early evening is when these animals are most active, so a night desert safari in Dubai is one of the best times to spot them.
Al Marmoom Desert Conservation Reserve
Al Marmoom is a protected desert area south of Dubai, created to preserve the dunes, wildlife and Bedouin heritage of the region. It is the largest unfenced nature reserve in the UAE and includes the Al Qudra lakes, freshwater lakes in the middle of the sand that attract flamingos, ducks and migratory birds, along with resident foxes, reptiles and desert plants.
An Al Marmoom desert safari feels very different from the busy safari areas near the city, as development and noise are kept to a minimum. Because of the low light pollution, the reserve is also a favourite spot for stargazing. The best time to visit Al Marmoom is from October to April, when evenings are cool, birdlife is richest and the night sky is clearest.
Al Marmoom Oasis: Arabian Welcome, Falcon and Sandboarding
At the oasis camp you receive a warm Arabian welcome with traditional coffee scented with cardamom, tea, fresh dates and chilled water. You then meet the resident Arabian falcon and the camp's horses, with time for photos. Falconry is a centuries-old desert tradition in the Emirates, and handlers explain how the birds were trained to hunt for Bedouin families.
Next comes sandboarding under the evening sky on the dunes around the oasis. Wear sports shoes for this part, as you climb the dune before each run. The small-group format means less waiting and more time on the sand, and the guide adapts the activities to the ages and energy of the group. Soft drinks and water are available throughout the evening.
Moonlit Camel Ride and Wildlife Walk at the Oasis
One of the most memorable moments is a peaceful camel ride across the oasis by moonlight, holding traditional oil lamps as Bedouin caravans once did. The camel's gentle sway, the glow of the lamps and the silence of the desert make this very different from a quick photo ride, and it can be repeated if you wish.
Your guide then leads a short walk in the dark to discover greenery in the middle of the desert and the animals and birds living around the oasis, such as peacocks, flamingos, guinea fowl, ducks, gazelles and Arabian oryx. Children under 12 must ride the camel with an adult. Bring a small torch or use your phone light on the walk.
Stories and Stars: Stargazing and Arabian Dinner
As night deepens, the group gathers for a guided stargazing session with high-powered telescopes. On clear nights you can see the craters of the moon, bright planets and, at the right time of year, even the rings of Saturn. The guide also demonstrates how nomads used the stars as a map to cross the sand, and shares tips for photographing the night sky.
The evening ends with a traditional Arabian dinner set at the oasis, with halal meat, rice, salads and Arabic sweets, before the drive back to your hotel. Evening temperatures are usually comfortable from autumn to spring; bring a light jacket in winter and loose, breathable clothing in summer. Stargazing depends on clear skies on the night.
