Full Description

Lasithi Plateau and Vidiani Monastery

The Lasithi Plateau is a wide, flat basin at about 840 metres above sea level, enclosed by the Dikti mountains in eastern Crete. Its rich soil is covered in orchards, potato fields and small villages, and it was once famous for the white-sailed windmills that pumped water for irrigation; a few still stand among the fields. The drive up from the coast, with its hairpin bends and views, is part of the experience.

The first stop is the Vidiani Monastery, a small Orthodox monastery dedicated to the Virgin Mary at the foot of Mount Louloudaki. Its quiet courtyard, painted interior and mountain setting make a gentle start to the day. You spend about 25 minutes here before continuing across the plateau.

Psychro Cave: the Cave of Zeus

Psychro Cave, also called the Dikteon Cave, is one of the most famous caves in Greece. According to myth, the goddess Rhea gave birth to Zeus here and hid him from his father Cronus. Archaeologists found Minoan altars and many offerings inside, proof that the cave was a sacred place for over two thousand years.

From the parking area a steep stone path leads up to the entrance, and a stairway then descends into a large illuminated cavern full of stalactites and stalagmites, with a small pool at the bottom. You have about 1 hour 40 minutes for the Zeus Cave visit, including the climb. The Zeus Cave tickets are not included and are paid at the entrance; wear good shoes, as the steps can be damp.

Eco park with traditional workshops

A short drive away, an eco park on the plateau shows the traditional crafts of the Cretan mountains. You can watch potters shape clay on the wheel, see candles being made by hand and browse small workshops with local products.

There is also a little animal farm and gardens, which children especially enjoy, and a café for a short break. About 45 minutes here gives you time for a slow walk among the workshops and a coffee with mountain views before the coach continues to Krasi. The workshops keep alive skills that were part of daily life in the mountain villages of Lasithi for generations, and many of the handmade pieces make light, authentic souvenirs of Crete.

Krasi village and its ancient plane tree

Krasi is a small traditional village on the slopes above the north coast, known for its cool natural springs and for its enormous plane tree, said to be the oldest and largest in Crete. Its trunk is so wide that several people holding hands cannot reach around it, and its shade covers the village square.

Next to the tree an old stone fountain still runs with fresh spring water. The stop lasts about 25 minutes, enough for photos, a walk through the lanes and a Greek coffee in the square, surrounded by the slow rhythm of Cretan village life. Krasi sits on the road between the plateau and the coast, so it makes a natural pause on the way down.

Olive mill farm visit and tasting

The day ends at a family-run olive mill farm on the hills, looking over the mountains and down to the Aegean Sea. A guide shows how Cretan olive oil is produced, from the olive harvest to pressing, and explains the production of local honey and olive oil soap.

You then taste the farm's olive oil, honey and other local products, and you can stay for an optional lunch made with fresh local ingredients, at your own cost. You spend about 1 hour 40 minutes here, a peaceful finish to one of the most varied Crete day trips from Heraklion, before the coach takes you back to your hotel. Bottles of oil and jars of honey are available to buy if you want to take a taste of Crete with you.
