Full Description
Ligaria bay, the dive site west of Heraklion
Ligaria is a small bay on the north coast of Crete, about 20 minutes by road west of Heraklion, just before the resort of Agia Pelagia. Rocky headlands protect it from much of the open-sea swell, so the water is usually calm in the morning and the sandy entry makes the first steps into the sea easy for beginners. That is why diving instructors in the area choose it for introductory dives and first lessons.
For anyone searching for scuba diving in Heraklion without a long boat ride, Ligaria is ideal: you walk in from the shore with your instructor, and within a few metres you are above rocks, sand patches and seagrass. Is Ligaria worth visiting even for non-divers? Yes, the beach itself is pretty and quieter than the big resort strands, so a partner who does not dive can relax nearby.
The underwater world of the Cretan sea
The Aegean around Crete is known for its clarity; on calm days visibility often exceeds twenty metres. On a first dive in Ligaria bay you usually see shoals of small silvery fish, colourful wrasse, bream gliding over the sand, sea urchins and starfish on the rocks and, with a little luck, an octopus hiding in a crevice. Meadows of Mediterranean seagrass sway on the bottom and shelter young fish.
Your instructor keeps the dive shallow and slow, so you have time to look around rather than worry about technique. Water temperature ranges from about 19°C in May to around 25–26°C in August and September, and a wetsuit is provided. The best time to try scuba diving in Crete is from June to early October, when the sea is warmest and the light underwater is brightest.
Learning to dive: training and safety
The experience starts on land with about 45 minutes of theory. Your instructor explains how the regulator delivers air, how to breathe slowly and calmly, how to equalise the pressure in your ears, how to clear water from your mask and which hand signals you will use underwater. You then put on the equipment and practise in shallow water where you can stand, until you feel comfortable.
Only then do you swim further out together for about 45 minutes in the water, always at the instructor's side. Groups are limited to six divers, so nobody is rushed and nervous beginners get extra time. A short health questionnaire is normal before any first dive; if you have heart or breathing problems, are pregnant, or have recently had ear or sinus issues, this activity is not suitable. Children aged 8 and over can join with their families.
Agia Pelagia and the coast around the bay
The stretch of coast between Heraklion and Agia Pelagia is one of the most scenic near the city: steep green hills drop to small coves with clear water, and the road offers wide views over the Cretan Sea. Agia Pelagia itself is a relaxed resort village with a sandy beach, tavernas on the seafront and boat rentals, and it makes an easy place to spend the rest of the day after your dive.
If you prefer to stay longer on the beach, you can choose the option that meets directly at the diving centre in Ligaria and plan your own day. With the default option, we collect you from your hotel in the morning and bring you back in the early afternoon, so you do not need a car or a taxi to reach this beginner dive near Heraklion.
