Full Description

Heraklion port and the high-speed ferry crossing

The day starts at Heraklion port, or at your hotel if you choose a pick-up option. From here a high-speed ferry crosses the Cretan Sea to Santorini in roughly two hours each way, with seats on board and a cafe if you want breakfast.

A day trip to Santorini from Crete works because the ferry does the long part quickly, and you do not need to plan tickets or transfers yourself. Bring your passport or ID card, and note that sailings depend on sea conditions. Sit by a window on the ferry if you can, because the first view of the island cliffs from the sea is memorable.

Fira, the capital of Santorini

Fira is the island capital, built along the cliff edge high above the caldera. Its narrow lanes are full of cafes, jewellery shops and small galleries, and from the terraces you look straight down to the sea and across to the volcano islands.

Free time in Fira lets you walk the caldera path, visit the cathedral square or simply sit with a coffee and a view. Ask your guide about the best viewpoints and what to see if you only have a short stop. Wear sunglasses and carry water, as the terraces are open and the reflected light from the white walls can be strong.

Oia and the famous caldera views

Oia, at the northern tip of the island, is the village in most Santorini photos, with white houses, blue church domes and old windmills along the caldera. Most visitors come to Oia for the views, the alleys and the marble-paved main street lined with shops.

It is worth reaching Oia early in your free time, because the lanes and viewing spots become busy. Comfortable shoes are important, as the paths are steep and paved with smooth stone. Take photos early, walk a little away from the main lane for quieter corners, and leave time to reach your meeting point on time.

The caldera and the optional volcano cruise

Santorini is what remains of a huge volcanic eruption, and the caldera is the flooded crater that gives the island its shape. Your guide explains the geology and the Minoan-era eruption that changed the island.

An optional volcano cruise to the volcanic islands can be added on the spot and is not included in the ticket, so ask the guide if there is time on the day. Food and drinks are not included, so budget for lunch. Even if you skip the cruise, the view of the caldera walls in layers of red, black and white rock is worth the stop.

Planning your Santorini day trip from Heraklion

The default option starts at Heraklion port and takes about 9 hours. Other options collect you from hotels in Stalis, Malia and Hersonissos, Anissaras to Ammoudara, Agia Pelagia and Sisi, or Agios Nikolaos to Ierapetra, and these days last 12 to 14 hours, with earlier starts.

The best time to visit Santorini is from spring to early autumn, when sailings are most reliable. A guide, island transport and the ferry are included, while the volcano cruise and meals are not. Because it is a long day, eat breakfast before you leave, wear layers and keep your passport and phone easy to reach.
