Overview

This Dia Island sailing cruise from Heraklion trades the big excursion boats for a comfortable sailboat shared with a small group. You meet the crew at Heraklion port in the morning or afternoon, sail out past the Venetian fortress and cross the open sea to Dia, an uninhabited nature reserve off the coast. The skipper anchors in its quiet turquoise bays, where you can swim, snorkel, try stand-up paddleboarding or simply sunbathe on deck while the wind and the waves do the rest. A freshly prepared Mediterranean meal with salads, local dips and fruit is served on board, with water, iced tea and soft drinks. It suits couples, friends and families, and private sailboat options with or without hotel pickup are also available on this page.

Full Description

Heraklion harbour and the Koules fortress

Heraklion is the capital of Crete and its harbour has been the island's main gateway for centuries. At the end of the old harbour wall stands the Koules, a sturdy Venetian sea fortress completed in the 16th century to guard the entrance, decorated with the carved lion of Venice. Along the waterfront you can still see the great stone arches of the Venetian shipyards where galleys were built and repaired.

Your cruise starts in the port area on Epimenidou Street, a few minutes' walk from the old harbour; please arrive 20 minutes before departure for check-in with your passport or ID. As the sailboat leaves the harbour, the fortress and the city walls slip past on one side and the open Aegean opens up ahead.

Sailing across to Dia Island

Dia lies about twelve kilometres north of Heraklion, a long, rocky island clearly visible from the city's seafront. Crossing to it under sail is part of the pleasure: the boat heels gently in the breeze, the engine goes quiet and you hear only the wind and the water. The crew is happy to show you how the sails work if you want to lend a hand.

The crossing usually takes about an hour, depending on the wind. Relax on deck with the welcome breakfast or snacks, and look back at the coast of Crete with Mount Juktas and the mountains rising behind the city. In July and August the meltemi wind can make the sea livelier in the afternoon, and the skipper always chooses the most sheltered route.

Dia Island nature reserve

Dia is uninhabited and protected as part of the European Natura network. It is a refuge for the Cretan wild goat, known locally as kri-kri, and for seabirds, including rare falcons that nest on its cliffs in late summer. Remains of an ancient harbour have been found underwater along its southern shore, showing that sailors have sheltered here since antiquity.

Because Dia is a protected nature area, landing on the island is not allowed for visitors, and the cruise enjoys it from the water. This keeps its bays clean and quiet, with very clear water and almost no development. If you are asking whether a Dia Island boat trip is worth it, the calm, empty anchorages so close to a busy city are the answer.

Swimming and snorkelling in the bays

The south coast of Dia is cut into a series of deep, sheltered bays with turquoise water over sand and rocks. The skipper anchors in one or two of them, depending on the wind, for a long swim stop.

You can swim straight from the boat, explore the rocks with mask and fins, try fishing with the equipment on board, or take a stand-up paddleboard to the edge of the bay; paddleboards are not used in strong wind for safety. Then the crew serves a freshly prepared Mediterranean meal of pasta, risotto, Greek and green salads, tzatziki, olive paste and a fruit platter, with water, iced tea and soft drinks. On the afternoon departure, the sail back to Heraklion is often lit by the setting sun.

Frequently Asked Questions

Straight answers to what travellers ask us most, before they book.

Is this a shared or a private cruise?

The default option is a small-group cruise shared with other guests. Private sailboat options for your group only are also available, with or without hotel pickup.

Is hotel pickup included?

Not in the default option: you meet the crew at Heraklion port. The private options can include hotel pickup from Ammoudara to Malia or from farther areas such as Rethymno, Agios Nikolaos and Elounda.

How long is the cruise?

About 5 hours 30 minutes, with departures at 09:00 and 15:00.

Can we land on Dia Island?

No. Dia is a protected nature reserve and landing is forbidden for all visitors. You enjoy its bays from the boat, with swimming and snorkelling at anchor.

What is included?

The sailing cruise with a licensed captain and crew, welcome breakfast or snacks, a Mediterranean meal, water, iced tea and soft drinks, snorkelling, fishing and paddleboard equipment, and music on board.

Is the price per person or per group?

The shared cruise is priced per person; the private options are priced per traveller with a minimum of two. The booking panel on this page shows the current price of each option.

How many people are on the boat?

The sailboat takes only a small group, which keeps the atmosphere relaxed and gives everyone space on deck.

Is it suitable for children or people with reduced mobility?

Children are welcome. Boarding and moving around a sailboat needs some agility, so the cruise is not suitable for pregnant women, people with mobility impairments or wheelchair users.

What should I bring?

Your passport or ID, swimwear, a towel, sunglasses, a sun hat and sunscreen.

Morning or afternoon: which departure is better?

The morning has calmer seas in summer; the afternoon departure brings softer light and often the sunset on the way back. From May to October both are lovely.

Is the meal Halal?

Halal meals are limited on Crete. The menu includes vegetarian dishes; tell us your needs when booking and we will check with the crew.

How do I book and confirm?

Choose your option, date and time in the booking panel on this page and send the passenger details. Our team confirms your booking on WhatsApp within minutes.
