Full Description
Omalos Plateau and the Xyloskalo start of the trek
The day begins with a scenic coach ride from Chania up into the White Mountains to the Omalos plateau, a high mountain basin about 1,200 metres above sea level. This is how most visitors get to Samaria Gorge from Chania, because the trail starts far from the coast and public buses run on limited schedules. The air is cooler here, so the early start pays off.
From the entrance gate at Xyloskalo, the "wooden stairway", a stepped path drops steeply into the gorge. This first stretch is the steepest of the whole route, so your guide sets an easy pace and explains the rules of the national park. Many people ask about Samaria Gorge tickets and the entrance fee: the park ticket is paid on site at the gate and is not part of our price, which is why your guide helps the group through the entry process.
The Samaria Gorge trail and National Park
The Samaria Gorge is roughly 16 kilometres long, a classic walk of Greece and a protected national park since the 1960s. After the steep opening descent the path follows a dry riverbed, crossing small wooden bridges and passing fresh springs where you can refill your bottle. Pine and cypress trees shade much of the route, and you may spot the shy kri-kri, the Cretan wild goat, on the rocks above.
The abandoned village of Samaria, left empty when the area became a park, makes a good rest stop with shade and water. Visitors often wonder whether the Samaria Gorge is worth it; the answer for most walkers is yes, because the scenery changes constantly and the descent is gentle once you pass the first steps. Plan for around five to seven hours of walking, depending on your pace and the number of photo stops.
The Iron Gates, the narrowest part of the gorge
Near the end of the trail you reach the Iron Gates, known in Greek as Portes, where the gorge narrows to only a few metres across while the walls rise some 300 metres on either side. Sunlight barely reaches the floor, and the cold air and the sound of water make it the most memorable moment of the walk. This is the point most people picture when they search for Samaria Gorge photos.
The Iron Gates are a short section, so you will not be here long, but it is worth slowing down to take in the scale of the rock. After a heavy winter the stream can run through the gap, and in some seasons the water level decides whether the passage is easy or needs care. Your guide knows the conditions on the day and tells you where to step.
Agia Roumeli and the Libyan Sea
The trail ends at Agia Roumeli, a small village reachable only on foot or by boat, which sits on the Libyan Sea with a pebble beach and a handful of tavernas. Most walkers arrive hot and tired, so a swim in the sea is the highlight of the afternoon. Pack swimwear and a light towel in your day bag, and allow time to eat before the boat.
From Agia Roumeli a ferry runs along the rugged south coast to the port of Chora Sfakion, the usual connection for the return, and the boat ticket is paid on site. The sea route is a restful way to see the cliffs you have just walked beneath, and a coach then takes the group back to Chania and your hotel. The whole day, from pickup to drop-off, lasts about twelve hours.

Important information
- The Samaria Gorge is open only part of the year, usually from spring to autumn, and opening hours and dates change with the weather and river levels. If the park is closed for safety, we will contact you about the options.
- Wear sturdy walking shoes with good grip, not sandals. Bring a hat, sunscreen, sunglasses and a light rain layer.
- Carry at least one litre of water and a snack or packed lunch; there are springs along the trail and food is sold at Agia Roumeli.
- The park entrance ticket and the boat ticket at the end of the trek are not included and are paid on site; keep some cash for both.
- Bring swimwear and a small towel for the beach at Agia Roumeli.
- Bring photo ID or your passport, as you may be asked for it at the park entrance.
- The best time to visit Samaria Gorge is early summer or early autumn, when it is warm but not at its hottest; midsummer afternoons can be very hot inside the gorge.
- Once you start the walk you cannot turn back easily, so tell your guide at the beginning if you are worried about your fitness.

Frequently Asked Questions
Straight answers to what travellers ask us most, before they book.
How much does the Samaria Gorge trek cost?
The price depends on the pickup option you choose and on whether you book for an adult or a child. The booking panel on this page shows the current price for each option, adult and child. The park entrance ticket and the boat ticket are paid on site and are not part of the tour price.
Is hotel pickup included?
Yes. Every option includes hotel pickup and drop-off in the Chania area. The option you pick decides which pickup area and time apply, and we confirm the exact point by email before the trip.
How long is the Samaria Gorge trek?
The whole day lasts about twelve hours from pickup to drop-off. The gorge itself is roughly 16 kilometres long and most people need between five and seven hours to walk it, plus time for the coach, a rest in Agia Roumeli and the boat.
How difficult is the Samaria Gorge?
It is a demanding walk, mostly downhill but long, with a steep first section and rocky ground that is hard on the knees. Walkers who are used to hiking and wear good shoes usually manage it comfortably, while those who are not fit may find it very tiring.
Is the Samaria Gorge suitable for children?
Children from 5 to 12 can join at the child fare if they are strong walkers who enjoy long hikes. Younger children are not accepted, and parents should think carefully about whether their child can walk for many hours.
What should I wear and bring?
Wear walking shoes, light clothes and a hat, and bring water, a snack, sunscreen, swimwear and a light jacket for the cooler morning on the plateau. A small day bag is easier to carry than a large backpack.
Can I book for today or tomorrow?
It depends on availability, and the pickup is very early in the morning, so it is best to book as soon as you know your date. Check the booking panel to see which dates are open.
What is the difference between the options?
The tour is the same on all of them; only the pickup area and pickup time change. Choose the option closest to your hotel: Perivolia and Halepa, central Chania, the coast towards Platanias, or the western villages around Kolymvari and Maleme.
When is the Samaria Gorge open?
The park normally opens in spring and closes in autumn, but exact dates are decided locally and depend on the weather, so opening hours and dates can change from year to year. Check the booking panel for available dates.
Can I swim at the end of the trek?
Yes. Agia Roumeli has a beach on the Libyan Sea, and most walkers stop there for a swim and a meal before the boat leaves. Bring swimwear and a towel in your day bag.
