Overview

This small-group 4x4 safari is a different way to reach Balos Lagoon, the famous turquoise lagoon at the north-western tip of Crete. You meet in the centre of Kissamos and board an air-conditioned off-road vehicle with an experienced English-speaking driver and no more than six guests. The rough track across the Gramvousa peninsula becomes part of the adventure, with stops at panoramic viewpoints over the lagoon, Gramvousa island and the wild coast. From the end of the track a footpath leads down to the beach, where you have about four hours to swim, sunbathe and enjoy the pink-tinted sand, often before or after the boat crowds. It suits couples, friends and active families.

Full Description

Balos Lagoon from the land

Balos Lagoon is a shallow bay enclosed by a sand bar between Cape Gramvousa and Cape Tigani, at the north-western corner of Crete. Its water shifts from pale aqua to deep blue, the sand is speckled pink with crushed shells, and the whole area is a protected nature reserve where loggerhead turtles, monk seals and many birds have been recorded.

Arriving by land has a big advantage: the first view. From the top of the footpath the entire lagoon spreads out below you, with Gramvousa island and its fortress beyond, one of the most famous panoramas in Greece. Is Balos Lagoon worth visiting? Without a doubt, and on this Balos 4x4 tour you can time your visit to avoid the busiest hours when the boats arrive.

The Gramvousa peninsula off-road track

The Gramvousa peninsula is a long, uninhabited finger of land pointing north from Kissamos Bay. Beyond the village of Kaliviani a rough dirt track of several kilometres winds along its eastern slopes, past wild thyme, rock and grazing goats, with the sea on both sides. Many rental car contracts do not cover damage on this road, which is why visitors often choose a guided off-road trip.

Your driver handles the bumps while you enjoy the scenery, with stops at viewpoints over the coast and Kissamos Bay. The drive takes about an hour each way including the photo stops. A small municipal fee for entering the protected area is paid in cash on the day.

The footpath and the beach

From the end of the track a footpath leads down to the lagoon. It takes about 20 to 25 minutes going down and 30 to 35 minutes coming back up, on a stony, partly sandy trail with no shade, so good shoes, a hat and water are essential. At the bottom you can wade across to the sandbanks, swim in the warm shallow water or simply relax.

With about four hours at the beach there is plenty of time to explore. There are few facilities and little shade, so bring an umbrella, a towel and snacks. Please follow the signs, keep to the marked paths across the dunes and take all rubbish back with you to protect this fragile environment.

Kissamos and planning your Balos trip

Kissamos is a relaxed town on the bay of the same name, about 40 minutes west of Chania by car. How to get to Kissamos? Public buses run from Chania, and we can arrange a private transfer if you prefer. The safari starts from a meeting point in the centre of town.

The best time to visit Balos is June and September, when the sea is warm and the lagoon is less crowded than in July and August. Departures at 09:00, 11:00 and 13:00, plus an early-bird sunrise option at 07:00, let you choose the light and the crowd level. The trip runs with a minimum of two guests, and in very strong winds conditions on the peninsula can be harsh.
