Full Description

Balos Lagoon by catamaran

Balos Lagoon, at the north-western tip of Crete, is a shallow bay of turquoise water enclosed by a sandbar and the rocky Cape Tigani, with sand tinted pink by tiny crushed shells. The lagoon and the surrounding peninsula are a protected nature area, and the only ways to reach it are a long dirt road and footpath or the sea.

On this Balos catamaran cruise you arrive early in the day, when the water is calm and the beach still quiet. A tender boat takes you close to the shore, and you have about an hour and forty minutes to swim, snorkel, paddleboard or wade across the lagoon. Is Balos Lagoon worth visiting? It is the most famous beach in western Crete, and arriving by sail is one of the most comfortable ways to enjoy it.

Gramvousa island and its Venetian fortress

Gramvousa is an uninhabited island just off the tip of the peninsula, crowned by a fortress the Venetians built in the late 16th century to protect the sea route. In the 1820s it sheltered Cretan rebels and later became infamous as a pirate base, and locals still call it the pirate island.

The catamaran anchors in Gramvousa's sheltered bay, near a sandy beach and an old shipwreck. You can swim by the shore or hike up the stony path to the fortress, about 25 to 30 minutes each way, for a breathtaking view over Balos and the sea; the fortress entry ticket is not included. Lunch is served on board here, and after the meal there is still time for one more swim.

Life on board the catamaran

A sailing catamaran is stable, spacious and comfortable, with sunbeds on the front nets and shaded lounges at the back. With a maximum of 25 guests there is room to spread out, and an English-speaking crew looks after everything from safety to food. There is a toilet and an outdoor shower on board, and life jackets for every guest.

The food is a highlight: Cretan appetisers such as local cheeses, olives and rusks, fresh salads, and main courses with meat, seafood and vegetables, followed by dessert and seasonal fruit. Halal meat cannot be guaranteed, so tell us about dietary needs when booking and we will pass them on; vegetable dishes are always included. Water, soft drinks, coffee, tea and fruit-infused water are unlimited.

Kissamos port and planning your cruise

The catamaran departs from Kissamos port at Trachilos, about 50 minutes west of Chania by road, at 08:30. How to get to Balos Lagoon from Chania without driving? The default option includes a round-trip transfer from set points along the north coast, from Georgioupoli and Kournas beach to Chania, Platanias and Kissamos, so you can simply relax.

The best time to visit Balos is June and September, when the sea is warm and the lagoon less crowded than in midsummer. The north-west coast is exposed to the strong summer meltemi wind, so the captain may change the order of the stops, and the cruise may be rescheduled or cancelled in bad conditions. If you are prone to seasickness, check the forecast with us before booking.
