Full Description

Uluwatu and the Bukit Peninsula

Uluwatu sits on the Bukit Peninsula, the limestone plateau at the southern tip of Bali, where cliffs drop into turquoise water and Indian Ocean swells wrap around the reefs. The famous reef breaks here have drawn experienced surfers since the 1970s, but those waves are for experts. The secret of a good Uluwatu surf lesson is choosing the sandy beaches nearby, where the waves break more gently and beginners can stand up safely.

The best time to surf in Uluwatu is the dry season from April to October, when the trade winds blow offshore on this side of the island and the water is clean. In the wet season the instructors simply switch to whichever beach is most sheltered. The water stays warm all year, so a rash guard is all you need. After your lesson, the cliff-top Uluwatu Temple with its sunset views is only a short drive away.

Balangan Beach

Balangan is a long, golden beach curving beneath green cliffs on the west coast of the Bukit, lined with simple beach cafés and fishing boats. At its northern end a reef break attracts advanced surfers, while the inside section, where broken waves roll across the sand, is ideal for learning at the right tide. The setting is relaxed and less built up than many Bali beaches, which makes it a favourite with surf schools.

Many travellers ask how to get to Balangan Beach: it takes around 30 to 45 minutes by car or taxi from Kuta or Seminyak and about 15 minutes from central Uluwatu, with parking near the sand. If your instructor chooses Balangan, plan to stay a little after the lesson to swim, rest in the shade and watch the more experienced surfers at the point.

Dreamland Beach

Dreamland Beach, also known as New Kuta Beach, lies in a sandy cove framed by limestone rocks between Balangan and Bingin. Its beach break produces steady, forgiving waves on most days, which is why it is one of the most popular spots for beginner surf lessons on the Bukit. The sand is soft, the water is bright blue and there are cafés and umbrellas along the shore.

When the swell is small to medium, Dreamland gives first-timers long rides on soft whitewater, while intermediates can try catching unbroken green waves further out with their instructor. It can be busy around midday, so early morning lessons are usually calmer. Is Dreamland Beach worth visiting even if you do not surf? Yes: it is one of the prettiest beaches of the peninsula for a swim and a lazy afternoon.

Jimbaran Bay

Jimbaran is a wide, sheltered bay just south of the airport, with a long sweep of pale sand and traditional fishing boats pulled up on the beach. In the mornings the fish market at its northern end is full of activity, and in the evenings the beach is known for grilled seafood served on tables in the sand at sunset. The shape of the bay softens the swell, so the waves are often small and gentle.

That makes Jimbaran a good choice for complete beginners and children when the open beaches are too big. Your instructor uses the calm conditions to focus on balance, timing and standing up, so you gain confidence quickly. After the lesson you can stay for a swim or a seafood meal, and the beach is about 20 to 30 minutes by car from Kuta, Nusa Dua and Uluwatu.
