Full Description
Tumpak Sewu Waterfall panoramic viewpoint
Tumpak Sewu, meaning a thousand waterfalls in Javanese, lies on the Glidih River at the border of the Lumajang and Malang regencies in East Java. Instead of a single drop, dozens of streams pour over a semicircular cliff around 120 metres high, forming a wide curtain of water framed by tropical forest. Many travellers compare it to a miniature version of the great waterfalls of South America.
The first stop is the panoramic viewpoint on the rim of the canyon, a few minutes' walk from the parking area. From here you see the whole curve of the falls at once, with mist rising from the pool and, on clear mornings, the cone of Mount Semeru behind. Is Tumpak Sewu worth visiting? For most visitors this viewpoint alone answers the question, and the early arrival of this tour gives you the best light for photos.
Trekking down to the base of the falls
The descent to the base of Tumpak Sewu is the adventure of the day. With your local trekking leader you follow a steep, often wet path down the canyon wall, using bamboo ladders, metal handrails and ropes in the steepest sections. At the bottom you walk along the river, crossing shallow streams on rocks and gravel, until you stand inside the canyon with the waterfall roaring around you and spray filling the air.
The way down takes around 30 to 45 minutes and the climb back up a little longer, depending on your pace. You will get wet, so wear quick-drying clothes and shoes with excellent grip; water shoes can be rented at the site. The trekking leader knows the safest route on the day and decides how far to go when the river is high. This part is not suitable for anyone uncomfortable with heights or steep ladders.
Goa Tetes cave
Goa Tetes, or the dripping cave, is a short trek from the base of Tumpak Sewu along the river canyon. Water seeps constantly through the limestone above, falling like rain over the cave mouth and feeding a series of small cascades and terraces of mineral deposits. The sound of dripping water and the cool air make it a calm contrast to the power of the main falls.
Reaching the cave involves more wading, rocks and a few ladders, and in places you walk under falling water, so a waterproof bag for your phone is essential. Your trekking leader shows you the safe route and the best viewpoints inside. Entrance to Goa Tetes is included in this tour. Plan about an hour for the cave and the walk to and from it before you climb back to the top.
Mount Semeru and the road from Malang
Tumpak Sewu is fed by springs and rivers flowing from the slopes of Mount Semeru, at around 3,676 metres the highest volcano in Java and one of the most active. On the drive from Malang through the towns of Turen and Dampit, the road climbs through coffee, salak and banana plantations, with Semeru often visible above the clouds in the early morning, sometimes puffing small clouds of ash.
If you are asking how to get to Tumpak Sewu from Malang, the drive takes about two and a half to three hours each way on winding mountain roads, which is why this tour leaves at 05:00. After the trek you stop for a simple Indonesian lunch with a drink at a local eatery; this is a Muslim-majority region, so halal food is the norm. You are back in Malang in the afternoon.
Malang as a base for East Java adventures
Malang is a cool, green city in the highlands of East Java and the ideal base for both Tumpak Sewu and Mount Bromo. Its Dutch-era avenues, the Tugu monument square at Alun-alun Tugu and the colourful hillside village of Jodipan are easy to explore in a free afternoon, and the city is well connected by train to Surabaya, Yogyakarta and Jakarta.
Many travellers combine a Tumpak Sewu day trip from Malang with a Bromo sunrise tour on the next day, giving two very different faces of East Java: the green canyon and its waterfall, then the volcanic desert of the Tengger caldera. The best time to visit Tumpak Sewu is the dry season from May to October, when the trail is safer and the water clearer; in the wet season, the trail to the base may close after heavy rain.
