Full Description
Banyuwangi, Gateway to Ijen
Banyuwangi is the easternmost regency of Java, facing Bali across the narrow Bali Strait, and the most convenient base for an Ijen tour from Banyuwangi. The town is about an hour's drive from the Paltuding trailhead at the foot of the volcano, and many travellers arrive by ferry from Bali or by train from Surabaya before heading up the mountain the same night.
Pickup is around 23:00 from hotels and guesthouses in the city centre, so try to sleep a few hours in the evening. The drive climbs through quiet villages, coffee gardens and forest; the air gets noticeably colder as you gain height, so keep a warm jacket handy.
The Night Trek to the Ijen Crater Rim
From the trailhead the path climbs for about three kilometres to the crater rim at roughly 2,300 metres. It is a wide, well-used track, steep in its middle section, and most walkers take one and a half to two hours with rests. Your guide sets a steady pace, checks on everyone and explains the volcano as you go.
Walking in the dark under a sky full of stars, with the lights of other headlamps winding up the slope, is part of the magic of this Ijen sunrise trek. Good shoes, warm layers and a little stamina are all you need. Gas masks are handed out before you approach the crater, where sulphur fumes can blow across the path.
The Blue Fire of Kawah Ijen
Kawah Ijen is one of the few places on Earth where you can see Blue Fire with your own eyes. Sulphuric gases escape from cracks in the crater at high temperature and ignite as they meet the air, burning with eerie electric-blue flames that are visible only in darkness, usually before about 4 or 5 in the morning.
If the authorities and your guide judge the gas levels and weather to be safe, you descend a rocky path towards the vents to watch the flames. The Blue Fire is a natural phenomenon and cannot be guaranteed; on some days access to the crater floor is closed, and the guide will then take you to the best viewpoints on the rim instead.
Sunrise over the Turquoise Acid Lake
As the sky lightens, the crater reveals one of the most striking sights in Indonesia: a turquoise lake about a kilometre wide, often described as the largest acidic crater lake in the world, steaming gently inside steep walls of grey and ochre rock. From the rim you can see the neighbouring volcanoes of East Java rising above the clouds.
The best time to visit Ijen is the dry season, roughly from April to October, when skies are clearer, but the view is rewarding all year. You spend time at the viewpoints for photos and a morning snack before the walk back down in daylight, when you finally see the forest and slopes you climbed in the dark.
The Sulphur Miners of Ijen
Ijen is also known for its traditional sulphur miners, who break solidified sulphur near the vents inside the crater and carry it up to the rim and down the mountain in baskets on a bamboo pole across their shoulders. Their work continues a long tradition and is one of the most remarkable human stories in East Java.
You will pass miners on the trail and in the crater; please give way to them on narrow sections, ask before taking close-up photos and treat their work with respect. Many sell small sulphur carvings shaped like turtles or flowers, a meaningful souvenir that supports them directly. Our guides know many of the miners personally and can tell you about their daily routine, the weight of the loads and how the trade has changed in recent years.
