Full Description
Padang Bai
Padang Bai is a small harbour town on the east coast of Bali, in Karangasem regency, best known as the port for ferries to Lombok and the Gili Islands. Behind the busy jetty, though, it hides some of the clearest water and easiest reefs on the island, which makes it a favourite for snorkelling in Bali without a long boat trip.
The drive from Ubud or the south of the island takes you through rice fields and villages towards Mount Agung, and arriving in the morning means calmer water and better visibility. In the snorkelling-only option, you meet the team directly in Padang Bai village. Its small beaches and colourful outrigger boats give the town a relaxed, village feel.
Blue Lagoon Snorkeling
Blue Lagoon is a small cove of pale sand just east of Padang Bai harbour, sheltered by green headlands. Its calm, crystal-clear water and coral close to shore make it one of the best snorkelling spots in Bali for beginners and experienced swimmers alike, and the warm tropical water is good for snorkelling all year.
With your guide you spend about an hour exploring the reef, where angelfish, cowfish, cuttlefish and moray eels hide among the corals, along with clouds of small tropical fish. Bring an underwater camera if you have one: the shallow reef is ideal for close-up photography. The beach is small and calm, a pleasant place to rest between swims.
Amuk Bay
The second snorkel takes place in Amuk Bay, the wide bay on which Padang Bai sits, stretching along the east coast. Here the reef is broader and the marine life varies, so the second hour feels quite different from the first, with more open water and larger coral formations.
Your guide chooses the best spot for the day's conditions and stays with the group in the water, pointing out creatures you might otherwise miss. After about two hours of snorkelling in total, you head back to shore for lunch. Because the two spots are so different, the combination gives you a much fuller picture of East Bali's underwater life than a single snorkel stop would.
Indonesian Lunch by the Sea
Lunch is a hearty Indonesian meal enjoyed with the laid-back atmosphere of Padang Bai, a welcome break after two hours in the water. It is the perfect moment to dry off, look over your photos and enjoy the view of the fishing boats resting on the beach.
Lunch is included in the default option, and the rafting and quad options include a meal as well. The snorkelling-only option does not include lunch, but there are small local eateries in Padang Bai. Let us know about any dietary needs when you book. In the rafting and quad options, the afternoon continues with the activity you chose instead of the waterfall.
Kanto Lampo Waterfall
On the way back you stop at Kanto Lampo Waterfall in Gianyar, a wide curtain of water tumbling over stepped black volcanic rock into a shallow pool, surrounded by tropical plants. It is one of the most photogenic waterfalls in Bali and easy to reach from Ubud and the south.
A path of steps leads down to the falls, where you can cool off in the fresh water and stand on the rocks for photos in the spray. Wear sandals with good grip, as the rocks are slippery. A visit to Kanto Lampo is included only in the default option. It fits neatly into the drive back, so the day ends with fresh water after the salt of the sea.
