Full Description
Bali Zoo and its tropical gardens
Bali Zoo opened in 2002 in Singapadu, a village between Denpasar and Ubud known for its craftsmen. The zoo is laid out across eight hectares of lush tropical gardens, with shaded paths, wooden bridges and enclosures planted to resemble the animals' natural habitats. It is about 30 minutes from Ubud and roughly an hour from Kuta and Seminyak, depending on traffic.
A visit with the standard entrance ticket usually takes three to four hours, enough to see the main areas, attend a few presentations and let children enjoy the water play area. Tickets are valid from 09:00, and the last check-in is one hour before closing. If you are wondering whether Bali Zoo is worth visiting, families with children and travellers keen on Indonesian wildlife tend to rate it highly.
Indonesian wildlife: tigers, orangutans and Komodo dragons
Many of the zoo's residents are native to the Indonesian archipelago. The Sumatran tiger, the smallest and most endangered tiger subspecies, lives in planted enclosures alongside white tigers. Orangutans, the great apes of Sumatra and Borneo, climb ropes and platforms in a forest setting. Komodo dragons, the largest lizards on Earth, come from a handful of islands in eastern Indonesia, and the cassowary is a striking flightless bird from Papua.
Through the day, keepers run animal presentations and talks that explain how each species lives in the wild and the threats it faces. The photo spot option adds deer feeding, a jungle and bird presentation and three optional photo spots with the zoo photographers, with one printed photo to take away.
Special experiences: breakfast with orangutans and elephant care
For a more memorable visit, the breakfast option lets you eat a guided breakfast from 08:00 beside the orangutans' playground while they have their own morning meal, with supervised encounters; the last seating is at 09:00. Afterwards your ticket remains valid for the rest of the day.
The elephant care option introduces you to the zoo's Sumatran elephants in a guided, ethical programme, with tea or coffee and a snack, lunch and a towel. The elephants enjoy rolling in their natural mud pool to cool off, a sight children love. For safety, participants must be over 120 cm tall, and a change of clothes is needed. A combined option includes both the orangutan breakfast and the elephant programme.
Singapadu and the art villages of Gianyar
The zoo sits in the heart of Gianyar's craft villages. Nearby Celuk is known for silver and gold work, Batubulan for stone carving and Sukawati for its busy art market, where you can buy textiles, paintings and souvenirs. Ubud, Bali's cultural centre, is a short drive north.
How to get to Bali Zoo is easy: by taxi or car hire from anywhere in South Bali or Ubud, or with our half-day option, which includes return hotel transfer from Kuta, Seminyak, Canggu, Jimbaran, Nusa Dua, Ubud, Sanur and Denpasar with pickups at 08:00 or 11:00, entry and lunch. Show your ticket on your phone at the entrance and enjoy the day.
