Lombok
Plan Lombok with Haqqi Tours: day tours, private airport transfers, attraction tickets and packages, run by our own team and confirmed on WhatsApp in Arabic or English.
Step out of your hotel in Lombok at first light and the island announces itself through sound: the call to prayer drifting from a white-domed mosque, roosters in the rice fields, the hush of waves on a crescent of pale sand. Mist clings to the flanks of Mount Rinjani in the distance, fishermen push brightly painted outriggers into the shallows, and a roadside stall is already grilling chicken with fiery chilli for ayam taliwang.

Lombok sits just east of Bali, across a deep strait that marks the line where Asian and Australian wildlife meet, yet it feels a world apart. Home to the Sasak people and known as the island of a thousand mosques, it offers Indonesia as many travellers imagine it once was: quiet bays, terraced valleys, weaving villages and a sacred volcano rising above it all.
Why include Lombok in your itinerary?
- Mount Rinjani, Indonesia’s second-highest volcano, dominates the island. Its crater cradles the turquoise lake of Segara Anak and a smoking young cone, while its forested slopes hide some of the most beautiful waterfalls in the country at Senaru.
- Lombok’s south coast is a sequence of spectacular bays, from Tanjung Aan and Selong Belanak to the headlands of Bukit Merese. The beaches are wide, uncrowded and framed by green hills, with sunsets that rival anywhere in Southeast Asia.
- The Sasak culture remains vividly alive. Traditional villages such as Sade keep thatched rice barns and houses with floors polished by hand, while Sukarara’s women weave intricate songket cloth on wooden looms in the shade of their porches.
Signature experiences in Lombok
Rinjani’s Waterfalls at Senaru
On the northern slopes of Mount Rinjani, the village of Senaru opens onto jungle trails leading to Sendang Gile, a graceful two-tiered cascade, and Tiu Kelep, a wide curtain of water falling into a cool pool. The air smells of wet earth and cloves, and monkeys watch from the canopy. Our guided day tour handles the long drive from the coast, local guides and timing, so you reach the falls in the best light.
Sasak Villages, Weaving and Ayam Taliwang
Spend a day with Lombok’s Sasak heritage: the thatched village of Sade, where homes are polished with traditional methods, Sukarara’s songket weavers and the pottery workshops of Banyumulek. Lunch should be ayam taliwang, grilled chicken in a spicy chilli paste, with plecing kangkung, water spinach with tomato sambal, or sate rembiga. Our guided day tours and trusted local partners introduce you respectfully to families who keep these crafts alive.
Kuta Mandalika and the South Coast Bays
Kuta Mandalika is Lombok’s relaxed southern hub, a laid-back town with fresh seafood, surf schools and cafés. From here, explore on foot or by car the curving bays of Tanjung Aan, the hilltop views of Bukit Merese at sunset, Mawun’s sheltered cove and the long arc of Selong Belanak. A private car with driver arranged by our team lets you hop between beaches without navigating steep coastal roads.
The Gili Islands by Boat
Off Lombok’s northwest coast, the three Gili Islands, Trawangan, Meno and Air, float in glass-clear water ringed by coral. There are no cars, so you explore on foot along sandy paths, snorkel among sea turtles and watch the sun sink behind Bali’s Mount Agung. Gili Meno and Gili Air are the calmest. We issue boat and ferry tickets and arrange transfers to the harbour, or include the Gilis in a guided day tour.
Mataram and the Water Gardens
Lombok’s capital reveals another side of the island. The Islamic Center of West Nusa Tenggara rises with soaring minarets, while the Balinese-built water palace of Narmada and the temple complex of Lingsar, shared by Hindus and Muslims, recall the island’s layered history. Traditional markets overflow with tropical fruit and spices. Our guided day tours combine these sites with a stop at Senggigi’s coastal viewpoints on the way back.
Neighbourhoods and quarters to know in Lombok
Kuta Mandalika
The south coast’s main base mixes small boutique resorts, guesthouses and new beachfront hotels along the Mandalika development. The vibe is laid-back and outdoorsy, popular with surfers, couples and nature lovers. It is generally safe and friendly; use only licensed transport at night. Choose it for dramatic beaches, sunsets from the headlands and easy access to the airport.
Senggigi
Lombok’s original resort strip runs along the west coast, with palm-fringed beaches and views across the Lombok Strait to Bali. It is quieter than in the past, which many travellers appreciate, with spacious hotels and seafood restaurants by the sand. It is safe, well connected to Mataram and the Gili harbours, and ideal for families and first-time visitors.
Sekotong and the Southwest
The remote southwest peninsula of Sekotong leads to the tiny southern Gilis, such as Gili Nanggu and Gili Kedis, with superb snorkelling and almost no crowds. Accommodation is limited to small eco-lodges and boutique retreats. It is peaceful and safe, best for travellers seeking seclusion, and our private transfers make the long scenic drive comfortable.
Senaru and the Rinjani Foothills
In the north, Senaru and the nearby villages sit on the green flanks of Mount Rinjani, among rice terraces and coffee and cocoa gardens. The air is cooler, nights are quiet and the stays are simple homestays and lodges. It is very safe and welcoming, perfect for waterfall lovers and anyone preparing to hike the volcano.
How long to stay in Lombok and how to pair it
Recommended stay
Plan four to five nights in Lombok to enjoy it properly. That allows two days on the south coast, one day for the waterfalls of Senaru, one for Sasak villages and Mataram, and a day on the Gili Islands. Add two or three nights if you want to stay on the Gilis or hike Mount Rinjani.
How to pair it
Lombok pairs naturally with Bali. In seven days, spend three nights in Bali’s Ubud or beaches, then cross by boat to Lombok for four nights including the Gilis. With ten days, add Yogyakarta for Borobudur and Prambanan, reached by a short flight we ticket. Over fourteen days, build a route through Jakarta, Yogyakarta, Bali and Lombok, combining domestic flights, ferries and our private transfers.
Best time to visit Lombok and the rhythm of the day
Best months
The best time to visit Lombok is the dry season, from May to September, when skies are clear, seas are calmer and Rinjani’s trails are open. April and October are good shoulder months, with greener landscapes and fewer visitors. From November to March, tropical showers are frequent, though usually short, and the Bau Nyale sea-worm festival takes place in February or March.
The daily rhythm
Lombok days follow the sun and the prayer times. Mornings start early, with waterfalls, villages or snorkelling before the midday heat. Lunch is relaxed, often simple grilled fish or nasi campur. Afternoons are for the beach or a nap, and the island gathers on hilltops for sunset. Evenings are calm, with dinner by the sea and an early night.
On-the-ground logistics in Lombok
Arrival
Lombok International Airport near Praya lies in the centre-south of the island. Kuta Mandalika is about thirty minutes away by car, while Senggigi and the Gili harbours take around one hour and fifteen minutes to one and a half hours. Boats and ferries from Bali arrive at Lembar, Bangsal or Teluk Nara. Our private transfers meet you at the airport or harbour.
Getting around
Lombok is spread out, with steep coastal roads and limited public transport, so walking only works within a village or beach. Licensed taxis operate around the airport, Mataram and Senggigi, and ride-hailing apps work in some areas. Scooters are common but risky for visitors. A private car with driver arranged by our team is the safest and most comfortable way to explore.
Local etiquette tip
Lombok is predominantly Muslim and more conservative than Bali, which surprises many visitors arriving from there. Swimwear belongs on the beach and at resort pools; in villages, markets and towns, cover shoulders and knees. Remove shoes before entering homes and mosques, use your right hand to give and receive, and be especially mindful of dress and noise during Ramadan and Friday prayers.

Frequently Asked Questions
Straight answers to what travellers ask most about Lombok.
Where should first-time visitors stay in Lombok?
Most first-time visitors divide their stay between Kuta Mandalika on the south coast, for dramatic beaches and sunsets, and Senggigi or a Gili island in the northwest, for snorkelling and calm water. Senggigi is the most convenient base for families, while nature lovers add a night near the waterfalls in Senaru.
Can Lombok be done as a day trip, or does it need an overnight stay?
A day trip from Bali is technically possible but wastes much of the day on boats and roads. Lombok is a large island, and its south coast, waterfalls, Sasak villages and the Gili Islands need several days. We recommend at least four nights to appreciate its beauty and slower pace.
What is the dress code and etiquette in Lombok?
Lombok is mostly Muslim and fairly conservative. Away from the beach and resorts, cover shoulders and knees, and women should bring a scarf for mosque visits. Remove shoes before entering homes and places of worship, use your right hand, greet people warmly and ask before taking photographs.
Is Lombok tourist friendly?
Yes. Lombok is welcoming and increasingly well equipped for visitors, with good hotels in Kuta Mandalika, Senggigi and the Gilis, though infrastructure is simpler than in Bali. English is spoken in hotels and tourist areas. Our team and trusted local partners arrange transfers, ferry tickets and guided day tours so everything runs smoothly.
Is it safe to travel to Lombok now?
Lombok is generally a calm and friendly destination. Take normal care with valuables, choose licensed transport, respect sea conditions and avoid riding scooters without experience. Before departure, check the official travel advice of your own government and keep our WhatsApp line handy for assistance during your trip.
What are the must-do things in Lombok?
Visit the waterfalls of Senaru, watch sunset from Bukit Merese, relax on Tanjung Aan and Selong Belanak, and snorkel around the Gili Islands. Explore the Sasak village of Sade and Sukarara’s weavers, taste ayam taliwang, and, in the dry season, consider a guided trek on Mount Rinjani.
How many days do you need in Lombok?
Four to five days is ideal for a first visit to Lombok, covering the south coast, the waterfalls, Sasak villages and a Gili island. If you want to hike Mount Rinjani or spend more time snorkelling and relaxing on the Gilis, plan for a full week or more.
What can I book in Lombok with Haqqi Tours?
Day tours, private airport transfers, flight tickets and ferry tickets, including Gili Islands Snorkeling Boat Trip with Turtles Lombok, Gili Air Snorkeling with Turtles and Underwater Statue Lombok and Gili Trawangan Sunset Snorkeling Boat Tour Lombok. Each has its own page, and the WhatsApp desk combines any of them into one plan with one written price.
How do I get from the airport to my hotel in Lombok?
Lombok International Airport (LOP) is in the south of the island: Kuta Lombok is 20 minutes, Senggigi about an hour, Bangsal harbour for the Gili boats about an hour and a half. Our private transfer meets you at arrivals with a name board, tracks your flight and takes you door to door at a fixed price for the whole vehicle; the transfer pages list every route.
Is there public transport from the airport to Lombok?
There is no train and few taxis outside Mataram and Senggigi, and buses run mainly to Mataram; for Kuta, the Gili harbours, Sekotong or Rinjani a private car with driver is far simpler and is the honest choice for families and luggage. With luggage, a family or a late flight, the private car is the simpler choice.
Which tours are available in Lombok?
Among them: Gili Islands Snorkeling Boat Trip with Turtles Lombok, Gili Air Snorkeling with Turtles and Underwater Statue Lombok, Gili Trawangan Sunset Snorkeling Boat Tour Lombok, Mount Rinjani Summit 2-Day Trekking Tour Lombok and Private Gili Islands Snorkeling Boat Trip Lombok. Each page says whether the day is private or small-group, what it includes and how long it lasts.
Are the tours private or in a group?
Both exist, and each tour page says which. A private tour has a vehicle and guide for your party alone; the desk can make most group tours private on request.
How do I book?
Fill in the form on any page or message us on WhatsApp with the date, the number of travellers and the hotel. A member of our team confirms the price and the details in writing within minutes.
Are the prices fixed?
Yes - every price is agreed in writing on WhatsApp before you travel and does not change on the day.
Do the drivers and guides speak Arabic or English?
It depends on the city and the day, so we do not promise a particular language; tell us your preference and we do our best. The WhatsApp desk always works in Arabic and English.
Can I change or cancel a booking in Lombok?
Yes, in the same WhatsApp conversation. The terms depend on the product and on how close to the date the change comes; the desk states them before you pay.
