Full Description

The Gili Islands off north-west Lombok

The Gili Islands are three small coral islands off the north-west coast of Lombok: Gili Trawangan, the liveliest, Gili Meno, the quietest, and Gili Air, closest to the mainland. They are known for white-sand beaches, turquoise water and some of the best snorkelling in Indonesia, all within a short boat ride of each other. There are no cars on the islands, which keeps the atmosphere calm.

Many travellers search for a Gili Islands day trip from Lombok, and our private full-day option is designed for exactly that: hotel pickup in the Senggigi area or Mataram, the crossing by boat, a full morning in the water and the return transfer. Everything is arranged for your group, so you do not need to buy boat tickets or look for a guide on the day.

Gili Meno snorkelling and the Turtle Sanctuary

Gili Meno is the smallest and quietest of the islands, and its waters are the best place to look for sea turtles. Green and hawksbill turtles graze on seagrass and rest on the reef, and your guide leads you to the spots where they are most often seen. Sightings are common but cannot be guaranteed, since the turtles are wild and move freely.

On the longer private trips, a visit to the Gili Meno Turtle Sanctuary adds a chance to learn how young turtles are protected before being released. Ask us which option includes it when you book. Please keep a respectful distance from the turtles and never touch, feed or chase them; your guide will brief you before you enter the water.

Gili Air reef and coral gardens

Gili Air has a gentle, family-friendly atmosphere and shallow reefs close to the shore. Your private boat takes you to a snorkelling spot where the coral is healthy and the fish are plentiful, from small colourful reef fish to larger visitors passing in the current. The water is usually calm and clear, which makes it easy even for people who have never snorkelled before.

Your guide stays with you in the water, helps with the mask and fins, and takes photos with the GoPro so you can enjoy the swim instead of worrying about your phone. Life jackets are available, and non-swimmers are welcome if they wear one; we recommend a private trip in that case. Mornings give the best visibility and the calmest sea.

The Underwater Statues and other snorkelling sites

Off Gili Meno lies one of the most unusual snorkelling sites in Indonesia: a circle of human-shaped statues on the seabed, set there as an underwater art installation that corals and fish are slowly turning into a reef. It is a popular stop for photographs and may be crowded in peak hours, even on a private trip, which is another reason to start early.

Not every option visits every site, and your guide adjusts the stops according to sea conditions, visibility and boat traffic for safety. If the statues are important to you, tell our team when you book so we recommend the right option and timing. Whichever sites you visit, the private boat gives you flexibility to stay a little longer where the water is best.

Planning your private Gili Islands day

The full-day option lasts about eight hours, with pickups between seven and ten in the morning from hotels in the Senggigi area and Mataram. Food and drinks other than mineral water are not included, so plan lunch on the islands, where there are many small cafés. Bring a towel, a change of clothes, sunscreen and a waterproof bag, as the boat does not provide them.

The best season for snorkelling is the dry season from May to October, when the sea is calm and the water is clearest, although mornings are good all year. If you stay on one of the Gili Islands instead, choose the two-, three- or four-hour private option from your island. Our team helps you choose the option that fits your dates and swimming level.
