Full Description
From Surabaya to Bromo by night
Surabaya, East Java's capital and Indonesia's second city, is the main gateway to Mount Bromo for travellers arriving by plane or train. A Bromo day trip from Surabaya starts early: our team collects you from your hotel or the train station at about 00:30, and the van drive to the Bromo area takes several hours through the sleeping towns of Pasuruan and Probolinggo regency. Many guests doze on the way.
In the mountain village at the edge of the national park you change to a classic 4x4 jeep, the only vehicles that can cross the sand and climb the steep roads of the caldera. The air turns sharply colder as you gain height, often 5 to 11 degrees before sunrise, so warm clothes are essential. The whole tour takes about twelve hours, with drop-off back in Surabaya around midday or in Probolinggo if you prefer.
The Bromo sunrise viewpoint
The first stop, and the reason for the midnight start, is a viewpoint high on the rim of the Tengger Caldera. You arrive in the dark and wait as the sky slowly turns from deep blue to pink and gold. Below you the whole landscape appears out of the mist: the smoking crater of Mount Bromo, the perfectly ridged cone of Mount Batok beside it, Mount Widodaren, and in the distance Mount Semeru, at 3,676 metres the highest volcano on Java, often sending up a plume of ash.
You spend around two and a half hours here including the wait, enough for dozens of photos as the light changes. The viewpoint is popular, so arriving early to find a good spot matters. Warm drinks and snacks are sold by local vendors. This view is the classic image of a Mount Bromo sunrise tour, and on a clear morning it is unforgettable.
The Sea of Sand in the Tengger Caldera
After sunrise the jeep winds down into the caldera itself. The Tengger Caldera is a vast ancient crater, about ten kilometres across, whose floor is covered by the Sea of Sand, a flat grey desert of volcanic ash from which Bromo and Batok rise. Crossing it by jeep in the early light, with dust trails behind the vehicles and cliffs all around, feels like driving on another planet.
On the plain stands a Hindu temple of dark stone used by the Tengger people, the local community who still follow their own Hindu traditions and every year climb Bromo to throw offerings into the crater during the Kasada ceremony. The jeeps park near the base of the volcano, and from here you continue on foot, or on a local pony if you prefer to ride part of the way.
Mount Bromo crater rim
From the jeep park you walk about one and a half kilometres across the sand and up the ash slope, then climb roughly 250 concrete steps to the rim of the crater. Mount Bromo is only about 2,329 metres high, but it is one of the most active volcanoes in Indonesia. At the top you look straight down into the steaming crater, smell the sulphur and hear the deep rumble from inside, while the caldera and the Sea of Sand spread out behind you.
Allow about an hour for the walk, the climb and time at the top. The path is sandy and the steps are steep, so take it slowly and wear a mask or scarf against the dust. During periods of higher volcanic activity the authorities can close the crater rim; in that case your guide shows you the best alternative viewpoints.
Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park: tips and best time
Mount Bromo lies inside Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park, a protected area of volcanoes, caldera, savannah and forest in East Java. Your entrance ticket is included, and your guide handles the ticket queue at the gate. The best time to visit Bromo is the dry season, from about May to October, when sunrise skies are most often clear; July and August are coldest at night, and the rainy season brings more cloud.
Bring a warm jacket, a hat and gloves, comfortable closed shoes, and a scarf or mask for the dust. The tour is relaxed in pace and suits most fitness levels, but the crater walk is not suitable for people with mobility problems. If you plan to continue by train or bus after the tour, book a departure after 12:00 to allow time for the return drive.
