Full Description

Borobudur at sunrise

Borobudur is the largest Buddhist monument in the world, a ninth-century stepped temple of nine platforms with more than five hundred Buddha statues and thousands of carved relief panels, and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. A Borobudur sunrise tour is the most atmospheric way to see it: the stupas emerge from the mist while Mount Merapi and Mount Merbabu appear on the horizon.

The tour offers two ways to watch. In the sunrise-inside-the-temple option you are among the first visitors on the upper terraces and breakfast is included. On the Stumbu Hill option you watch from the Punthuk Setumbu viewpoint outside the temple and then climb Borobudur with a local guide. A copy of your passport is requested after booking for the inside-the-temple option, and the rules for the upper terraces can change.

Mount Merapi jeep tour

Mount Merapi rises to almost 2,900 metres north of Yogyakarta and is regarded as one of the most active volcanoes in Indonesia. A Merapi jeep tour drives you in a 4x4 across lava fields, boulders and river valleys shaped by the eruption of 2010, stopping at viewpoints and at places that show what the volcano left behind.

The ride is bumpy and dusty, so bring sunglasses and a scarf, and the mornings offer the clearest views before cloud gathers. Your Merapi entry ticket and the jeep ride are included in this tour. Whether the summit is visible depends on the weather, and safety rules can limit which areas are open.

Prambanan Temple Compound

Prambanan is Indonesia's largest Hindu temple compound, built in the ninth century and dedicated to Shiva, Vishnu and Brahma. The central Shiva temple stands almost 47 metres tall, and the reliefs along the walls tell the epic of the Ramayana. It was repaired after the earthquake of 2006 and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The tour finishes here in the afternoon, when the stone glows in warmer light. Allow about an hour and a half to walk the courtyards. The main Roro Jonggrang temple is closed on Mondays, so plan accordingly. Entry fees for Borobudur and Prambanan are paid separately on the day, to your driver or guide.

Planning a Yogyakarta full-day tour of Borobudur, Merapi and Prambanan

This is a long day, about twelve hours, starting at 3:00 or 4:00 depending on the option. Lunch is not included, so your driver stops at a local restaurant where you can eat at your own pace. The small-group format keeps the jeep and van comfortable, and your driver handles the timings.

It works best for travellers who want the main temples and the volcano in one day and are happy to start early. If you prefer a slower schedule, look at our separate Borobudur and Prambanan tour and our Merapi jeep tour. The best time to visit Borobudur is at sunrise, and the best time for Merapi views is the morning.
