Full Description

Tumpak Sewu Waterfall

Tumpak Sewu, also known as Coban Sewu or the Thousand Waterfalls, sits on the border of Lumajang and Malang in East Java. Dozens of streams fall together over a horseshoe cliff into a deep green gorge, forming a curtain well over a hundred metres wide, and it is often called one of the most beautiful waterfalls in Indonesia.

A Tumpak Sewu waterfall tour involves a steep walk down to the base, where the spray, the rainbow light and the rocks of the river bed make the best photographs. The path can be slippery, so wear shoes with grip and bring a change of clothes and water shoes. The rangers help on the descent, and it is best visited in the morning when the light is clear.

Mount Bromo sunrise and the Sea of Sand

Mount Bromo rises about 2,300 metres in Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park, in a huge caldera where the Tengger people live. The classic Bromo sunrise tour starts long before dawn: a 4x4 jeep takes you up to a viewpoint where the light spreads over Bromo, its neighbour Batok and the steaming ridge of Semeru in the distance.

After sunrise you drive across the Sea of Sand, the flat volcanic plain at the foot of Bromo, to walk up the stairs to the crater rim. Bring warm clothes because the air is cold at dawn, and a scarf or mask for the ash. Is Bromo worth visiting? For most people it is the highlight of East Java, and the jeep and permits are included in this tour.

Ijen Crater and the blue fire

Ijen is a volcano complex at the eastern end of Java, famous for a turquoise crater lake and for blue fire, electric-blue flames produced when sulphur gas ignites on contact with air. The hike starts in the early hours of the morning, climbing for about an hour and a half to the rim, and you can descend towards the crater edge with your guide to see the flames.

The lake itself is highly acidic and the air near the crater is full of sulphur fumes, so gas masks are supplied. You will also see the sulphur miners who carry heavy loads down the mountain by hand. Blue fire is not guaranteed because it depends on weather and local rules. The crater is closed on the first Friday of each month, and it is not recommended for children under five, pregnant women or anyone with breathing problems.

How the four-day route works

The standard option starts in Yogyakarta at about 7:30 with an executive train to East Java, then van transfers to the waterfall, the Bromo area and Ijen, before crossing to Bali and dropping you at your chosen area. Breakfast is included on days two to four, entrance fees and permits are included, and lunch and dinner are paid by you.

Other options change the starting point and length: the budget four-day tour from Yogyakarta, three-day tours from Malang and Surabaya, and four-day tours starting in Bali that finish in Bali or in Malang. They use basic local accommodation with private rooms or shared twin or double rooms, depending on the option. Choose according to your budget, how far you want to travel and where your trip ends.
